We have purebred black angus cows and hefiers and I am wondering what the best breed to cross them with to add pounds and still produce fertile hefiers and still have black calves or black baldies.

Best crossbred is an Angus cow and an oil well, lot's of profit that way just look in the angus journal.

I think you answered your own question..........there's only one breed that makes a true baldie when crossed with Angus!!

hahahahahahahahhahahah that made me laugh, and I will have to give a second. GO with Hereford or Saler

Hereford, I'm on the other side, breeding my Heredfords with angus makes some mighty fine crosses. Personally I prefer the Reds. Honestly, get by all this CAB B.S., what does a black hide really do for you? I'll take a Red Angus over a Black Angus of same type any day.

Although I agree with your logic Ben, a black hide does have its attributes. Eventhough there is no difference in the reds and blacks of the same type, I have more often than not seen blacks and black baldies bring a nickel a pound more than the reds or any other breed. We raise blacks, reds and we recently bought some hereford bulls to start getting baldies. The Hostile Native is partial to reds so I had to prove it to her on the price difference. As far as crosses go on black angus, in my opinion hereford is the way to go. Not only have I seen a better price for the calves, but you get a good hybrid vigor.

I don't put anything on the auction block due to direct marketing everything, but I'm well aware of the premium black hides can bring. I'm just honestly curious what advantage, physiologically, a black hide has? I think anyone can tell you that you take a Red Angus and a Black Angus, peel off the hide and there is no difference in the product the consumer purchases.

This years class crop were all sired by a Gelbvieh. The cow herd consists of some purebred Herefords, a few F1 Hereford/Red Angus and a few Shorthorns on lease. So that makes my calf crop have F1 Hereford/Gelbvieh and Shorthorn Gelbvieh plus a few F2 Hereford/Red Angus/Gelbvieh. F2, as most know, is where you max out your hybrid vigor.

In your situation it wouldn't make any difference then. Honestly I can't see any advantage of blacks over red other than what I stated earlier.

We must have different buyers here because the red hides will cost you a dime. I'm not going to raise red cattle here with a hope of changeing the buyer's mind the $50 per head dock I take in the fall is a hard pill to swallow. The Gelbveih will loose most buyers they just don't want to feed something that keeps growing and growing and never finish. Those were the buyer's words as he was looking for some big calves for september delivery. He passed on them without a blink. Problem is most of the (NEW) Gelbveih are 1/2 or 3/4 Black Angus anyhow so why not just stay with the Angus Kinda like Black Simmental's most likely 7/8th Angus these (Other) Black breeds are rideing on coattails in my opinion.Their about as purebred as a put together salebarn herd.

I like the Angus Maine cross, use to run alot of those before going all angus. They will add bone & butt. A lot ezer to work with an Saler. I had a few of those one time for about 4 days. That was enuff for me. Also had black & red baldies & the angus x Maine raised better bigger calves.

There will be a good set of Salers at Midland Bull Test. Brown's at LodgeGrass, Montana used to run some also. Christianson Ranches had a big herd too. Years ago Diehl Ranches in Carr, Colorado had some good bulls.

For a guy that doesn't like EXT's why didn't you just tell the kid that nobody raises them anymore. That would have been doing him a favor. :-)
