Andrea Mendes A Montreal area MP is introducing a private members bill to make it mandatory for cattle, sheep and goats to go no more than 12 hours without food, water and rest. The Canadian Coalition For Farm Animals is supporting it. The current legislation allows for 52 hours. At first glance it seems pretty innocous but when you ponder the ramifications and logistics it would take $.25 at least off the calf market overnight. Were as far north as cattle are in Sask. and we can be in southern Alberta feedlot alley in under twelve. Personally I'd rather see my calves hauled straight through even if it was furthur-to get in a situation where the have people who know what they are doing handle them. If shipping fat cattle to the U'S ever become a reality again would they allow the customs seal to be broken to unload cattle to rest on the way to slaughter. I think the proportion of cattle that are on truck 52 hours is pretty miniscule. I have no idea where they plan on getting the calves off loaded to rest or what trucker that would sit a half day waiting on them. I'm calling my MP ASAP in the A'M to talk it over with him-I put this here instead of PB because I wanted the ranchers to read it!

perhaps they should read the ABP work on livestock transport.
That is pretty serious stuff.

I just did the Maps and Trips thing and it's 21 hours from our yard to Thunder Bay, Ont. I think that's where cattle going East are offloaded for feed and water. I sold a load of breds to Lucanville,Ont a few years back-the buyer dinked around getting a truck here till they started calving-so I sorted the pairs off-and sent the heavies-one got off the truck with a new calf and one had calved but no calve to be found-I'm thinking the trucker dealt it in Thunder Bay-I gave the guy his money back on that heifer anyway. They were loaded pretty loose 30 on a tri with lots of straw.
