Big Square Balers

Some of the local daries are looking for hay but they will only take big square bales - - - in this area there are very few and I know nothing about them.

The daries are getting 3X3X6 foot bales but would prefer 4X4X8 foot bales. What are the balers to stay away from??? Which are the best ???? Any good used for sale ????
 
WE keep looking at them year, after year, after year... I wish I could tell you more except people keep suggesting the New Holland ones... I have head great things about Klass as well except for 1 big problem.. Lack of local dealers.. Almost bought one at an auction. Talked to a couple of custom guys at that one and they outbid me on that Klass... That was only a 3x3 though...
 
George we have a 4755. What are you looking for New or Used?? Ours is a Hesston...I run it...They are kinda like a sewing machine, one little thing out of wack and it can be a real pain in the kester... We looked at the tandem axles, but it looked to hard to get underneath and you will be there at some point of time.. I am married to Joe farmer so I can bahhaa at anywhere from 6 to 8 miles an hour.... They say you don't need much horse power?? I run a 8440 on ours with the rear duals off.. And sometimes it will make it smoke... Once you buy one look out cause you are going to learn a ton about hay and alfalfa.... Differant fields and conditions make baling alot of fun.... Don't let them guys tell you that the hay will not keep. That's bunk....
Older models go hesston... The newer ones the Internationals are okay. We looked at the Klauss and it looks simple enough and the money is not outrageouse...
 
we run two New Holland BB960's I really like them

every baler will have problems, after today, I swore I would never buy a New Holland again, but tomarrow, it may run like a charm.
if you are not very mechanical, I suggest you hire a guy to bale it for you, because the tiniest problem will fry your brain.
I have one knotter that will go 50 bales and tie every one...then miss for the next 25. really frustrating!!! plus my AC blew up and I spent the afternoon in a boiler of a cab!
what ever they reccomend you put on there for a tractor, go up about 50 horse! something heavy, stop the rocking to save your back!
as for the tandems, I think it is a design to stay away from.....just my opinion, but blow a tire and you will crap your pants!! they do not give them away, and you about have to get them overseas!!!

perhaps you ought to just buy hay from me, haul it out there, and sell it to the dairies!!

I am looking for used - - - I have run a 336 square baler for years with either a 4230 or a 4010 pulling. I know I will need to move up in HP - - - the biggest tractor I currently have is a 4850 with front wheel drive.

I'm not sure I will buy one but I am going to listen to all you have to say.
 
Jigs, You are right, except with the man thing and I would give you a run for yur money on that one....If you have a knotter that isn't tieing down underneath where the threaders are.. There is a pipe that that all the treaders are on... Take an emory cloth and polish the bar where those threaders are.... I threathened to torch ours.. Called Kearney Equipment ( they are super with square balers...I think Ken is his name) and told them if they see smoke to the north west I just torched our baler.. He said " Oh mame, Please don't do that!) Cracked me up... And he talked me through my problem... You have to keep em clean and maintained.. I very seldom have a problem with tieing. If I do, It's because grass or hay has gotten in the knot.. Baling with hay that is to dry may be a headache although I have done it with thunder boomers lurking.
 
Thanks for the info on the knotters you guys. I've been eyeballing an NH 4x4x8 for awhile now, but always wondered about the knotters. Of course the salesguy swore up and down that they NEVER miss a tie. I suspect the next baler is gonna be round again :)

After our experience with big squares, I would recommend them only if you live where it rains very little or you have all your hay storage under a roof. We stacked them several different ways, but the rain and rot made it all the way to the bottom of the stack. Tarps are impossible to keep on a stack due to the wind. Round bales are still the only way to fly here.
 
bottom knot is there, just missing on the top, or second tie....got pissed and finished up with just 5 strings, and there is one hell of a mess for the service man to undo in the morning.......

when they work they cant be beat, when they don't, you want to just bang your head against a post.
 
Over the years I have had a 14T - - - 24T and a 336T - - - I have never had a serious problem with any of them and I was doing several thousand custom bales.

Are the big ones all that different??? I know with the small balers you only have 2 ties per bale but when you are baling in excess of 120 bales per hour you must have your machine in top condition and use only good twine.
 
Jigs, Your bill hook must be out of wack.. How often do you grease your knotters.... I give em three pushes each time I have to get out..It's got to be the timing on your bill hook. George, my suggestion is to find someone who has one and ride with them or find a dealer to demo for you..
