Is this more the type of bull needed?Angus 62 said:I don't know about bigger better or faster- fatter sure fits. There hasn't been a show bull that that made a positive contribution to the industry in forever.

You always take the bait, but you are pretty good at spitting out the hook too.
I could sure show a picture of a fat show bull who is sound and 11 years old now and still bred cows last summer.

My background is more heat tolerant genetics, but I like to keep up to date with as many other breeds as possible, so often post articles and pictures of interest. Intrestingly, where I am managing at the moment, we run 100% native Angus and Hereford herds on an all grass (+ organic) system, the sales of bulls and semen especially to the USA has increased over the past 3-4 years, as breeders are re-introducing "heritage" bloodlines into their herds.VLS_GUY said:Ady Bob,
That Bull you linked to, Balmachie Black Bear H050, is 7/8 North American breeding: http://abri.une.edu.au/online/cgi-bin/i4.dll?1=3E37202F&2=2420&3=56&5=2B3C2B3C3A&6=275D5B262523262220&9=5250505D Not only that he is one of the type that resembles a Black Limo. Also look at his birth weight and calving numbers; he is no heifer bull to say the least.
I guess the UK breeders had to do something to stay competitive with the double muscled breeds in the commercial market.
 I guess if you have a friend that had one that wouldn't freeze then that settles it. Show bulls won't freeze.Angus 62 said:How about any contribution. Not only are most not capable of breeding cows in anything resembling range conditions quite a few will never freeze semen. Had a friend that bought one of the Angus show/sale bulls and got exactly two calves out of him. When he contacted the breeder he was told that '' Well he was a breeder.''
You'd have to ask oldtimer. He coined the term. It was kind of tongue in cheek. The denver hill bulls and the yard bulls will be similar in pedigree to 95% of the rest of the commercial bulls in the nation.VLS_GUY said:Red robin,
How fast are we talking about? Chianina fast or just EXT fast?
Exactly.Denny said:I've bought bulls at the NW that turned out to be great deals. Some cattle can handle hot feed some can't.I bet 90% of bull sale bulls are fed just as hot of ration. In the end fat sells if the bulls are in work cloths your customer base is limited people talk a good talk but come sale day they bid differently. I don't like over fed bulls because it cost alot of money but I don't like under fed either as they cost money also. It's a fine line a guy treads selling breeding bulls to fat to thin Just Right. Some bulls are just right a month or two ahead of others its a tough deal to get them all the same on the same day.

Angus 62 said:The Angus bull sale draws practically zero interest from commercial cattlemen though it is in their back yard. A few have tried it and never went back. Why gamble on a bull that might have problems because of the way he was fed when their are bulls raised right available? And I can guarantee you those problems aren't evident on sale day.
A few years ago I saw one of the first Angus bulls with an over 100 YW EPD. He had been shown a lot and he could of water skied on his toes. Around the corner was the ROV Show Heifer of the year. She had this starved out dink of a calf on her and it was pretty evident her udder was shot. What a waste.
