I was wondering if anyone has fed mineral with bio-moss to cows to keep calves from getting scours? Was wondering best way to feed it, we have a tmr wagon, so could blend it in the feed. Also wondered if it would help to feed it to the calves in a lic tub? thanks

From what i know of it and talking to my local vet, it seems to be a witches brew that can help slow scours down but not cure it and it should be fed once the cows start there 3rd trimester to build up in there system enough to have the best results. As far as feeding it i have only ever seen it in tub form.
Best advice i can give you is get the calves to a dry play and maybe try exceed at birth that will give you about 7 days of bacteria protection to help ward off the sickness till there natural anti-bodies can take full effect.
Just what i know of it and a thought to help ya out. Good luck with everything and may your calves be born healthy.

Works wonderful in a mineral program. Bottom line the bacteria attach
themselves to the protein in the gut and the calves pass the bacteria out their back end.I think it was first tried in dairies with huge succes.
Big area in NW Montana that experienced epidemic scours for
years started using mineral with BioMoss several years ago and it
worked exceptionally well there. If you have a scour problem, I'd sure
recommend trying it.

Can I ask: Are you on a mineral program now? I mean, do you feed
a good mineral year round? That usually helps keep scours away, because
the mineral makes the colostrum much better which in turn enhances
the calves immune system. FWIW

Good luck!

Yes we are on a mineral program, we are just getting ready to start calving, due on 4/14. We have a solid snow pack yet, temps been very cold, and not looking forward to calving in this stuff, going to get very muddy and wet, we do calf on 60 acres. Have some neighbors using this and thought I might try it, I can get it in a mineral form. thanks

I used Scour Guard for years, and never had any problems. Just an occaisional case like every other year or so. Last year I had 12 to 15 cases, and lost 2. This year I am using Vigortone with biomoss. So far so good.

If I was feeding cows with a tmr wagon, I would force feed my mineral with it in order to guarantee intake and then I would include bio moss in the minereal and also include rumensin in it so that you can control cocci with the added benefit of improveing feed efficiency. Just make sure you get it mixed well.

Word of caution: you can't just 'feed rumensin to control cocci'. It must be fed at a certain level. I think there is a misunderstanding out there where controlling cocci is concerned. Same goes for Bovatech. It has to be injested at a certain level or it doesn't work either. FWIW

Other than that, I think your suggestion is very sound, SMN.

I see it as a poor mans Rumensin. It works okay, but not great. The only thing I see it working on is young calves in the shelters. Other than that, maybe some organic beef programs

As good a product as bio-mos is my mineral supplier says it is probably the most oversold product he carries. He says it is hard to talk someone out of something that gives them a sense of security. More often that not the customer will buy it even if they really dont need it.

We have used Bovatec in our custom mineral for years with good results on cocci. Trying Bio-Moss this year for the first time on the recommendation of several different contacts as to results for scours. We will see if it helps us.

Funny, in the winter we can't keep enough mineral in front of these cows, in the summer they will barely touch it.

We've used it the last two years with good results but I dont know if it has to do with the fact that we only had our home-raised heifers the last two years only. Before that(2006-2010) we always bought some extra heifers and sold them a bred threes. We seemed to have way more problems when we brought outside cattle in. It would be interesting if the bio-mos would have helped on the years we bought heifers.

I have no idea who your mineral supplier is, but I suggest one of you talk
to the ranchers around Augusta, Mt. They had epidemic scours for years.
One rancher tried biomoss in the mineral with terrific results. The vet
showed up one day and told the rancher that he heard that his calves didn'ty have scours this year and he didn't believe it. The rancher said to
go take a look for himself. The vet drove through the cows and calves and
what he saw made a believer out of him. He asked what they had done
different and the answer was Bio-moss. They did feed a formula with Bio-moss and CTC but many of the ranchers in that area got on the product
and it changed the scour problems in a big area.

We don't sell much of it, in fact I can only think of one customer that uses it, but to say it was 'oversold' might be a stretch. When you have a huge problem and biomoss solves it.......it makes a believer out of them.
I will say scours doesn't seem to be as big a problem here as it does other places.

As for your question on the cattle that was brought in, I would say biomoss
would work on them as it works in the gut, passing the bacteria out
the backend. It was first used in dairies and they by a lot of it because it
does work.

Hope this helps!

Dont get me wrong I like the product, what I was told from my mineral guy is that he has some guys the insist on feeding it 6 months out of the year. That is what he meant by "oversold".

I am also sure that it would help on the boughten heifers also, it is just that I never had a hint of a problem until I brought something in. Thankfully I have been keeping enough of my own to not have to worry about someone elses problems.
