blue heeler

yes i started the new day yesterday, thanks for your help.he loves to go to the lake and run and thats just what he has been doin.now i control the food.yes i know thats kinda kreepy,im just kinda ocb that way, lol.ill stop, lol

Kola , i agree.A scoop in the morning and at night some excercise, and the dog should be just fine.My pup gets some table scraps now and then, but not much.Has'nt had any health issues.

Our dogs are self fed on a high energy kibble for working dogs. Three skinny ones and one pleasantly plump. They all run about three miles a day plus whatever work they have to do so they stay in good shape.

Mine (one 80 pounds, one 50) get about four cups a day each in the summer, but in winter when they're outside all day in the cold, they pretty much self feed just to keep up condition. They're very active dogs and burn up the calories like crazy. If they do start to chunk out in the winter they'll get restricted too, but that's rare.

If you have a treadmill in your house.....you can train him to walk on that every day.

It's not hard to do....and will do him a lot of good, esp on those rainy days when you can't walk outside

i also started him on the purina healthy weight and reduced the amount i was giving him on the senior one.its just been a few days but he seems to be more active motivated,i guess hes not weighed down by being stuffed all the time.i really dropped the ball on this one, lol.but its fixable

It will take time and your new routine has to be FOREVER....and EVER.

He didn't get fat overnite....so he won't slim down overnite either.....be patient and ignore it when he goes into the " poor pitiful starved doggie" mode also.

My Ausssies(45-60lbs) get about a half cup of Calf Manna in the am and 2 cups Black Gold in the pm...and maybe once or twice a week a big spoon of meat grease. They stay a good working weight. Besides helping your dogs hips, mite add a few years on his life also being a little thinnner.

When I was Feeding my Show Dogs
I would buy an aged ewe at the Sale _ Kill and skin it and cook it whole in a 55 gal barrel _ remove the bones _ and add Rice and cook some more _ Package and Freeze and feed as Needed _ Mix it with a dry dog food

Feeding:
Dogs in the wild Did Not Eat Every Day...
I all-ways let My dogs FAST One Day per Week

It is all about how many calories a dog, horse or human burns. We have a 22 pound jagdterrier who gets 2 cups in the morning, 2 cups in the evening and if he is hungry he will eat a lunch with my husband at the shop. But he goes 90 miles an hour during his waking hours. He hunts, follows the tractor, 4 wheeler, patrols the farm, etc.... He just burns what he gets. He is actually hard and very fit too.

Congrats on taking the challenge to what is right for your heeler. I often recommend people put their dog on a diet but it isn't that often that people take heed to what I say and actually do it. Good for you and good for your dog.

well, meet shotzie, blue heeler, aint ever been on a diet, always eats what i eat and she is 16 years old,she dont work cattle anymore, but she still manages to heel a one eyed bantam rooster.

well its still goin, that weight control food fills him up with just a touch and he seems to kick around a little lighter on his feet.now maybe he will burn the fat off.funny how when you limit the food they will do just about anything and with a gape, lol.think this will work i do

well took him to the vet and he lost ten, they want twenty more, lol.i reduced the dry food and started adding carrots and green beans,he took a likin rite off.hes mad that snacks now are carrots instead of people food and dog biscuits at will.walkin him up hill and hes getting a little better.
