When I checked the pickup this morning to make sure the chicken wasn't hitching a ride again I found the ol hen had left me a couple eggs for all my trouble. :D :D Life is good. Please excuse me now while I go have some scrambled eggs.
 
How does she keep from freezin' her feet?


Even here, in the South, we've had hens get froze feet on the roost, let alone what you showed her roostin' under the truck.

I bet she'd be tougher than shoe leather to eat :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

The pickup has a wood floor on the flat bed. The hay falls between the boards and onto the gas tank. That's where the hen stays most of the time, on the hay covered gas tank. My wife really enjoys her chickens and last year we built them a new chicken house. She locks them up in it at night. We foam insulated it and put up double pain insulated windows. Their water never even froze when we had a few -40f nights last winter.

Son of a gun, my chickens would be filled with envy if they saw that! The ""Brown Egg Inn"? More like the "Brown Egg Palace"!
 
That has to be the nicest hen house I've ever seen! We're thinking of building one too, and I think I want one like that. I used to raise a couple of hundred chickens every summer as a sideline, and I miss them. I think a small batch of layers would be nice to have.

Speaking of hitchhiking birds, we used to have one we called the Rodeo Hen. She was a little wild bantam hen, and she spent an entire winter out in the steer pen. This is a Canadian winter, with blizzards, 35 below, the whole works. She'd sit on the steers' backs to keep warm. When a steer left the straw to go to the feeder, she'd ride along. At the feeder she'd jump off, fill up with feed, and then hitch a ride on the next steer back to the straw, where she'd hunker down on his back and keep warm. I don't think her feet touched the ground all winter. :D :D :D :D
 
Now you've done the unforgivable. We got rid of the last chicken here about 15 years ago. Mrs Gcreek took one look at your Hen Hilton and immediately went into "chicken mode" again. :roll: You are now invited for a visit, I will have all the materials here when you arrive.

I will hafta admitt,I have seen alot of chicken pens,that one takes the cake,them ole hens need to get to layin to be worth their keep :D

Sorry about that. :D I was hoping you'd invite me to help you thin down your wolf population not build a chicken house. :? Some reason I've always wanted to shoot a wolf. It's on my bucket list.

We built a first class insulated chicken house a few years ago. Now I am going to have to renovate. Thanks a lot! :mad:
 
I plan on building ours out of rammed tires. You lay used tires on their side, ram them full of clay, then add another layer. It's labor intensive yes, but indestructible and very low maintenance once you stucco over the walls. It will also be built into a sharp bank, so partially "earth-sheltered". We'll orient it facing south, with a full wall of windows to maximize solar gain. I've been toying with a similar design for a year-round greenhouse off the back deck.
