bred cow prices

we don't know what the markets are going to do if we did we would all be rich but the point has been brought up if you don't have the cows your not going to make money but your not going to loss it either. I wouldn't recommend trying to doulble your herd but you need to at least replace your culls . those 1500 dollar cows might look cheap next winter if the same cow is 2000 dollars.. but that is the gamble we all take in this business . I bought some 4 year old 1200 pound cows start the first of march for 1250 back in dec. they needed some groceries but there coming around. feel fortante there

A couple of dispersals coming up here over the next few weeks. A few small herds at a couple of sales and then a herd of 235 cows and 150 bred heifers.

The heifers came as yearlings from Soderglen Farms in Alberta. Anybody from Alberta familiar with them? I think it's a good time to have good group of heifers to sell.

So we will get a feel for the market for sure!

I would rather own a $1500 bred cow than a $1000 grasser steer. I haven't been to any sales but it looks like decent cows in Canada can still be had for $1250 to $1300.

About $320 between now and fall, $650 calf, bred cow dispersal at $1200,
$230 margin.

We got the best 8 cows at a sale today for $1000 to $1100.00 to replace some old girls. These new cows are second calving tan Char cows and they're heavy in calf from a total herd dispersal. Only a couple of cows went for more, about $1200.00, but those ones weighed 1700 to 1800 pounds.

I guess there is one advantage to living in the most disadvantaged cattle market area in North America.

Those cows wouldn't be much off that to kill would they. About 40 miles NW of me are some of the biggest cowherds for average size I've seen any where in my travels. Char/Simm cross cows with the odd hard calving Red Angus bull thrown in for good measure. One outfit was on their 16th zipper on their heifers and weren't all that concerned-they said we keep the biggest heifer calves-and they were having BIG calves themselves. They get paid well in the fall but it's earned money. I sorted their calves for video one fall and with 12 heavies cut out they scaled just under 900 for the heavy load.

Anything under 1,100 lb is on the small size here. No point trying to break it down by breed, since we saw a few 1600 pound black cows yesterday, and some 1000 pound Charolais

Frame and condition is a consideration too though. You can have a 1,000 pound cow that hasn't eaten much and turn her into a 1.300 pound cow without too much trouble. Our cows probably average in the 1,300 pound range. Some are bigger, but not many are too much smaller than that.

Thanks. We sold some fat 1300 lb cows last fall, some thinner 1150 lb cows ans then there were a group that were not fat or thin but weighed 1370. Those are the kind that creep in here that we would rather not have.

We ran into a tax problem and needed to spend money or pay taxes for 2010 :???: So started looking for cows in nov. hoping to find hereford or red angus...couldn't find any for under $1400.00 and none close so would have to add shipping on to that. Our neighbor had black angus cows for sale, 4,5, and 6 yr olds for $1250.00. No shipping, they were synchronized and AIed and most are AI daughters themselves. They are a bit bigger than our cows but he runs them fairly similar to how we do, so we bought them. Got to say, I am not thrilled about buying black cows (no offense  ) but they will have nice black baldies next year.

Be careful Nicky, before you know it you'll have a multi-cultural herd like ours. :P
