Broadus, Montana

Hi all, was sent here from a different forum, Cattletoday.com to see if anyone here is familiar with the Broadus, Montana area. My Ex-Husband is relocating there to work on a ranch for some guy named "Steve", that apparently just recently bought 7000 acres. (He grew up there, then went to Hollywood, was in a couple Baywatch episodes, etc..)
The ex is moving our 8 yr old son there, which will be hard on me, but I think it's a good opportunity for my son to learn about ranch life, and the way I grew up as well. (I grew up in Northern AZ on a little bit smaller operation, but there were still beef cattle(Simmental-BrahmerX)) My son REALLLLLY wants to go, so I decided not to start a big custody thing.
I was just wondering if anyone knows of this ranch they're moving to, what's it like, what are the people like, what is the school like there, etc. (Apparently the ranch is 16 miles southwest of Broadus) , or if anyone knows who this "Steve" guy is...they're being a little secretive on details, and I can't help but be a little overprotective.
Thanks in advance. This has been a really hard decision for me to let him go, so now I get to sit here in MN, freezing my butt off, wondering what to do with all these "pets" my son has collected over the last few years.(Cats, dogs, horses, ponies, chickens, and 2 holstein calves.)Big Barbeque, I'm thinking, LOL!
 
I am fairly familiar with Broadus, and I know several ranchers that live around that area. It is actually one of my favorite places in Montana, and I think people that live in that area are down to earth, good honest ranch folks. It is a pretty area with the Powder River flowing near the town, and lots of pine hills and rolling country nearby. We were looking at several ranches between there and Miles City, and one south of Broadus, to buy so we could get our land all in one unit. But we were able to get that done here eventually, so all worked out great. :!: I would have had no problems living there, but moving to a new area has it's drawbacks for re-starting a ranch, and I am glad we still have our great neighbors and friends here.

As far as Steve goes, I might need more info, and you are getting close to the Rez. when you go west of Broadus. Lots of ranches are owned by non-tribal ranchers on the Rez. over there anyway. That is some great country to run cows in. It is a ways from a bigger town though. Miles City is about 90 miles or so, and Belle Fourche is 100 miles east. I think you should just bite the bullet if you can, and find work in Miles City so you can be closer to your son. It is a fabulous cowtown for the northern plains.
 
I would second what Tap had to say.

When in Western Montana, I worked for the newpaper there.
The owners were from Eastern Montana and had lived in some
different areas. They always said their favorite was Broadus.
Of course they lived in town.

Miles City is known to be a very friendly little town and workers
are badly needed in this area. Maybe not particualary Miles City
but certainly Glendive, Baker, anyplace with the oil boom going
on.

I'll do a little research and see if I can come across who Steve is.
I have a few connections there, as I'm sure Tap does too.
 
Just a little update... My son is back in MN for Easter break with me. He's having a Blast in Montana, helping feed and brand calves, riding fence, and all kinds of fun stuff. He wants spurs now, came back in his boots and brought his "work hat" and "Go to town" hat, lol! (I'm so proud of my little cowboy! sniff, sniff!) :heart: :cry: :heart: He got in last night at midnight, was up at 6 this morning, and woke me up and asked if I wanted him to go feed the horses and calves for me.

Anyways, got a last name for y'all, Steve and Ginger Held.
Anyone ever heard of them?

I've been through it quite a few times and delivered bulls there-the ranch was SW of town but I can't remember the man's name-he was a big old boy is all I can remember. The people in Broadus were always nice and friendly-isn't there a fairly big country school south of town a ways. Dang I need to go on a U'S excursion soon I miss my trips there lol.
 
Yea, he also said that all the heifers have 6 teats. Are they messing with his little brain, or are there some funky cattle in Montana? Could be something in the water...
After all, my little Cowboy has grown 6+ inches in the 3 months he's been gone! Too big for his pony now, and everything!

I've always heard that the proper way to count cattle was to count the teats and divide by four. On that outfit, you'd have to have the total count and divide by six. :wink: :-)
