Japan's 22nd mad cow disease case confirmed in Hokkaido+

Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)SAPPORO, Jan. 23, 2006

A 5-year-and-4-month-old cow that died last week on a Hokkaido farm had mad cow disease -- the 22nd case in Japan, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said Monday.

The carcass of the female Holstein cow that died in the Hokkaido town of Betsukai will be incinerated and not enter the market, the ministry said.

The cow was born in September 2000, before the 2001 implementation of a ban on meat-and-bone meal suspected of being a cause of the disease, formally called bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

The Hokkaido prefectural government will investigate the route of the BSE infection analyzing feeds, the ministry said.

The cow tested positive in a series of screenings at a meat inspection institution in Hokkaido, it said.

The report on mad cow disease came as concern over beef safety has again been aroused among Japanese consumers after the government said Saturday that a bovine body part considered a mad cow disease risk had been discovered in a shipment of U.S. beef at Narita airport.
