Well, Tim, we've both been saying that we need to close the loopholes in our feed ban and that we need to test more and open testing up. Now doesn't that tell you something? You need to ask?

Yes, apparently I do need to ask. Since you declined to give a simple yes or no answer, your above post seems to imply that you are saying "No,the current firewalls are not adequate to protect consumers from domestic bse". Am I reading that correctly???

Yes, you are correct. You win a prize from the bottom shelf. Do you know how a pencil works?

There you have it. An R-calf member who believes that the current firewalls in the USA are NOT adequate to protect consumers from domestic BSE. What's for supper tonight at your house Sandhusker, Australian beef???
As a matter of fact I don't know how a pencil works. I am pretty sure though, that someone like you, who pushes one for a living, could instruct me. :)

There you have it. Somebody finally figured out what R-CALF has been saying for three years.

Can you provide a quote to back that up? I'll bet you a brand new pencil that you can't. You in?? :)

It's quite apparent that their surveillance program IS working.

On the ones they test...Can you imagine the number they may have if they tested ALL like Japan...Could make Japanese cattle/beef look plumb healthy....

Could you imagine the number the US would find if they tested the same percentage as Canada. :cowboy:

Why doesn't USA test like Canada?

I should add this, so nobody gets the wrong idea...... Personally, I believe that the firewalls the USA has in place ARE adequate to protect consumers from domestic BSE or BASE. I don't hesitate to grab a burger or a T-bone steak whenever I am in Minot or Bottineau, North Dakota.
It is unfortunate that an American Cattleman's group, such as R-calf, believes domestic American beef to be unsafe due to inadequate BSE firewalls. :?

Tim,

You deserve a medal for getting Sandhusker to fess up.... :D

Your the same as me when I m in the US I dont think twice about grabbing a burger or haing a nice steak... bit I always give them a hard time about corn fed beef....

You've got two choices;
1) Be honest about the problem, address it directly and fix it.

2) Deny it and bury your head in the sand hoping it will go away and hope it never comes back to haunt you.

It is said to be a 2000 year model.

If so---That would be born after the USDA's March 1999 magic date that they said would be safe to export to the US....

Bill, what was that about your feed ban "greatly reducing" BSE? Looks like it's 5 before and 5 after.

Only an absolute fool would argue that the feedban has not had a positive effect in North America.

The UK had well over a hundred thousand positives in a cow herd smaller than Canada's. We have had 10.

10 compared to over a hundred thousand. Yes Canada's feedban has been effective in reducing the spread of BSE.

The big question you should be contemplating Sandhusker is when will the US be exposed for its BSE problem it continues to keep hidden. Better keep looking over your shoulder Sandhusker............. you're next. Hopefully when it happens you will lead the charge for justice and and not slink back into the shadows like I expect you will.

Why doesn't USA test like Canada?

The US has a long standing tradition and has become quite profficient at hiding the truth regarding testing even when using independent labs. It was known for quite some time that the Soviets and East Germans were leaders in doping in sports but the US were quick learners and in fact some will argue became better at hiding it. We all remember when Ben Johnson was caught and crucified during the steroid scandal of the Seoul Olympics. Everyone knew Carl Lewis was also also on the juice but it was the American who were banging at the table long and hard to deflect attention from their own guilty hero. Now take this and apply it to BSE and you can imagine how easy it is to slide test results around and manipulate numbers when they are using their own labs for BSE testing.

Many people see significant similarities between BSE in the US and the rampant steroid abuse and denial of Flo-Jo, Marion Jones and Mark MacGuire and other American heroes who kept their performance enhancing "secrets" hidden....or simply ignored?

There is a heck of a lot more at stake for the beef industry than a couple of medals or a home run title. Let's hope someone starts coming clean on this.

I do agree with Sandhusker that the US has two choices:

1) Be honest about the problem, address it directly and fix it.

2) Deny it and bury your head in the sand hoping it will go away and hope it never comes back to haunt you.

Carl Lewis was doping... Good point bill. It all makes sense now. Why not admit there is a problem in Canada? No its much easier to bite the hand that feeds you. Blame the US. Its are fault. Point fingers at the US. We are an evil empire with an evil govt.

hey fulton pull you head out---. Canada not only has admitted they have a problem they are taking steps to correct it. Enhanced feed bans. New SRM rules. Oh yea M'ID. What has the US done? Remember you do have BSE native cases in the USA.

ODDTIMER better clean your glasses, Bill did mention Big Ben.

We all know you you often miss things Canadians post as it makes it easier for you to twist thing at will.

Don't worry I'm straight as an arrow but I do wonder why you would be even thinking about whether someone else is gay or not..........unless?

I did cut my sons hair when he was younger I don't think that qualifies as a hair dresser. Sorry Oldtimer you or any male are definitely not my type but good luck and keep looking.

The goverment doesn't do the testing in the USA?

What does Canada use? They use a government agency don't they?

Thanks for taking the time to reply Bill! :D

Initial testing is done in each country in their own labs with suspicious samples sent on to the OIE approved lab in Weybridge England. Of course the lab in England only tests the samples not already screened out by the Canadian and American testing process as negative. That was how the US Texas case was almost missed. A review process by the US Office of the Inspector General discovered irregularities with that case and it was later announced to be positive.

I am not 100% sure but I believe the Weybridge Lab is still used by all countries to verify all country's positive cases. Flounder or BSE-tester would probably know more.

The USA uses several University Labs that contract preliminary BSE screening tests.

Not all samples are verified at Weybridge now. Just the ones that are questionable to be "Atypical", or the ones that were screwed up like the Texas cow.

All that is needed for verification now is a snapshot of the WB results. That can be done by e-mail.

Summary of ORA BSE Import Bulletin 99B-14

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has alerted its import field offices
to the potential importation of human food products and nutritional
supplements containing ruminant material from BSE-affected or at-risk
countries as determined by United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA)/Animal, Plant Health and Inspection Service (APHIS). The current
action is a followup to an earlier FDA alert issued in January 2000
regarding bulk shipments of high risk bovine tissues from these same
countries. An expanded list of products at issue and a list of the current
BSE-affected countries is set out below.

USDA/APHIS has prohibited the importation into the United States of all
edible ruminant products from Europe, Oman, and other BSE-affected
countries. The Import Bulletin will facilitate FDA's careful review of all
imports of FDA-regulated products to ensure coordination with APHIS on the
prohibitions. FDA's review will include evaluation of product ingredient
lists to determine whether the products offered for import contain certain
ruminant materials. Products that appear to contain ruminant material from
the identified countries will be referred to APHIS for disposition.

PRODUCTS
Any products containing ruminant material such as (but not limited to):
Cheese products containing meat of ruminant origin
Ruminant meat products
Poultry products containing or processed with ruminant products
Rennet from ruminant animals
Pie fillings containing or processed with ruminant products
Multiple ingredient food products (soups, stews, sandwiches, mixed dinners,
etc.) containing or processed with ruminant products
Baby foods, geriatric foods, and dietary foods containing or processed with
ruminant products
Vitamins, minerals, proteins, and other dietary supplements that contain or
have been processed with ruminant material
Food additives (emulsifiers, enzymes, flavor enhancers, etc.) containing or
