Bull Sales

Good point WB if you can buy a higher quality bull for cheaper money, jump all over it. Now is the time to improve genetics and get a more bang for the buck. The next three or four years aren't going to be easy but future genetic planning is what it is all about.

Northern rancher I got hit in the eye with some of that Canadian snow this morning. It really stings, can I at least get a shot of rye to ease the pain? :D :wink:

My .02:

A lot of the weakness in bull prices can be attributed to supply and demand. There is a greater supply of breeding stock on the market than commercial producers are demanding.

With the price of land what it is now days (all over the US) most new ranchers are hobby ranchers (if not hobby at least it is not what feeds the family). I would bet that most of these new ranchers went the seedstock route instead of the commercial route (it's more glitzy). Well now all these new outfits are having bull sales selling 40-60-100 bulls a year pretty soon all these new bulls overwhelm demand, especially when demand is soft due to the current market and because land has went out of commercial ranching and into seedstock ranching when the new owners took over. Not to mention land taken out of production all together by the "new western" set ala Ted Turner.

It's a trend that is hitting Angus the hardest because all these new outfits went into the registered angus biz.

Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
 
We have been on a up market the last few years down here partially due to two things:

1- When the Clinton Admin. made the settlement with Black Farmers (a vote buying scam) who claimed they were being denied USDA loans, many got $50,000.00 each to put in farms, cows, etc. They spent big bucks on bulls.

2- Tobacco buyout folks were/are spending their money on bulls also.

Most of this is drying up now.

Isn't it sad when one segment of ag desires another segment to suffer in order for them to prosper.

What's sad about agriculture is the willingness of all segments to belly up to the government trough at every turn. I say stand on your own two feet or die!!! To heck with all the government slop. Get your butt off the tit!!!
 
In every livestock market there are high years and low years.
The low selling years weed out the inferior stock (and unfortunately many new breeders) and the quality animals will still be sought after. Right now we are seeing the horse market absolutely bottoming out. However, the really good stock is selling at the highest prices we have ever seen. So cull, cull and cull some more. If you get blind with the animals that you have get someone with an eye to come and look at your stock. Pull out the crap and replace them with some of the really good ones. It costs the same to feed garbage as it does quality. Trust me there will always be an animal or two that you are running on, "just in case it gets better". Better to replace it with something that already IS better.

Before some smart A comes on here, I know it is a caucus and not a primary. That doesn't change the effect.

AND, it's been going on a lot longer than the ethanol push too.
 
Pretty seldom that we buy many bulls anymore, only 4 last year and 2 of them are disappointments. There is so much potential with AI to raise your own...with fewer surprises.
 
I have to agree with the bigger numbers of bulls for sale,drought, corn prices makes bull sales a tough sale....... Bull sales around here have been pretty tough..And some deservingly.... Me too Cal. I can waste alot of semen for even $1000.00 and have noone to blame but myself... We haven't did the bull sale rackett for along time and still can sell with the big dogs.......
Alot of our friends who have bull sales are going back to private treaty sales... And I wish them the best of luck....
 
Trust me, it isn't fun having bulls right now in SD, but rain would help immensly. I was at a sale the other day sitting next to a guy that said he needed some but wasn't going to buy until he knew he could keep his cows. "I know I might be paying 3000 for crap but it is the way it is" That attitue is keeping sales cheap.
