Spent the day at a couple of local bull sales: Anderson Charolais and Galpin Angus...Both sales were very soft compared to previous years..

Andersons have some nice quiet Charolais cattle (only one bull acting up) and even tho they brought in about 20 bulls less then normal years- their average was down...Averaging around $1950- on 44 bulls with 4 or 5 No Sales....

Galpin Angus also has quiet cattle- and sold 20 bulls and 20 heifers with the bulls averaging around $1690...Top selling bull was a Dr. J Analyst son (mgs GDAR Traveler 044) that sold for $2600...The Analysts were the top selling sire group- altho personally I liked a Mytty In Focus son (mgs--Double Rito 525 EAR) that sold for $2250 and a GT Shear Force (mgs OCC Jules 790J) that only sold for $1250 better....

I went to a bull sale today in Gordon, NE. The Jacobson Family held their 39th annual sale, and sold some very nice bulls. Had I not been already stocked up on all the bulls needed for this spring, I would sure have bought some there today. 20 yearling bulls averaged about $1200, and 19 two-year-olds averaged about $1800. The quaility of the bulls was excellent. Probably many potential bull buyers were home calving out cows.

I took some open cows to the sale today and was pleased with their proceeds. Six cows averaged 1363 pounds apiece and brought $51.33 per cwt, which came to $700 per head. Five two-year-olds which had lost calves averaged 970 pounds. They brought $69.75 per cwt, and averaged $677 per head.

Bull sales are really soft so far this spring...All the local averages have been down...A person could pick up some good range bulls for $1500 or less....
Ubar Red Angus 5th Annual Red Angus Bull Production Auction that was held last week had 52 Bulls Avg. $1962...
Top Bull was Lot 1--Ubar Hammel 8036 To Kelly Overmiller Of Smith Center, Ks $4000.00.
Sired By The $51,000 Top Seller In Last Years Sale--Ubar High Capacity 224.
A Moderate Framed Bull That Will Work For Heifers. 73# Birthweight.
His Pedigree Goes Back To Boot Jack, Buffalo Creek And Leachman.

Eayrs Angus Ranch of Glasgow and Fallon, MT had their sale yesterday...They are an old local outfit that has been raising angus since 1962- altho a few years ago they partnered with Leachmans (before that went bust) on some Gelbvieh composite bulls- and about 1/2 the bulls they sell now are unregistered and have some Gelbvieh influence...

Top bull selling was an unpapered composite bull sired by Centennial Strategist 199 that sold for $2750....
Several of the angus bulls sold for heifer bulls- as the herd has quite a reputation for calving ease bulls...

33 bulls averaged around $1600
They had a $1300 minimum on the bulls and had 4 no sales...

Pair prices were good tho- with first calf heifer pairs selling from $1200 to $1270.....

Our local breeders but on their sale and averaged over $3000 on 90 yearling and two year old black bulls. I think the high was $7300 to a purebred outfit in British Columbia-all the consignors have commercial cattle too so have a good idea what their customers need. Only one bull passed and he was an ET calf out of an embryo from Stevenson's.

My neighbor bought three pretty good yearlings last wek a SAV Final Answer, a Bennet Total and a Badlands Forte. They're getting a whack of OCC Emblazon flush calves should be interesting.

Anyone up for a guessing contest?
Closest to our overall sale average - Friday April 17th. Bulls are here:
http://www.YourChoiceBullSale.ca

Winner gets a cap with a 4 LED lighted brim - of course that means I get your mailing address and you are subjected to a life of receiving our bull sale catalog
- closest to but not over
- one guess per person
- noon on Friday cut-off

Good Luck and I hope your guesses are all low!!!

Today I attended a "cow country" bull sale- McRaes Big Dry Angus Sale...And it was the hottest bull sale I attended this year- with hands waving everywhere from a crowd that just got some rain- and really showed some optimism...

Bulls looked really good- and being home raised were in perfect shape to go to work without melting away (not over fat like some feedlot/test bulls)...They consistently weighed around 1150-1200 lbs with a few on either side...All very quiet- with no signs of disposition problems ( Hillari says she put the bull whisperers hex on them  ).....

The 61 bulls averaged $3015-- with the top bull being $4100 and the low bull being $2200- all going to cow people- and not an average made by a multi dollar bull swap between bull peddlers- altho some of the folks I talked to were using the bulls for their registered herds....

Charlie, Brent and Jack have built up a following of those Missouri River and northeast Montana folks that are very pleased with their program and very loyal...

At the start of the sale Brent delivered a fine tribute to his Dad- Charlie- a long time cattle, horse, and sheepman- who passed away earlier this month...

Top bull was Lot 26- a Vermillion Danny Boy R231 son (mgs SAF Directive) that sold to Robert Cosgriff for $4100...

Lots of $3600-$3500 bulls sold....Got to the point that if they didn't sell for $3000, you started wondering what you were missing seeing :???:

Lots of multiple buyers with Bruce Ferguson buying at least 7 bulls- Rathert Ranch buying 6 bulls- with several others buying 3-4....

Afterward the Big Dry crew hosted their normal gettogether where you get to see folks you only see once or twice every year (bull sale and rodeo time) .... Personally I really liked the looks of some of the smaller framed B D A R Boomerang P035 sons- that Brent said just went to a major bull stud (? my oldtimers disease is showing up again) for collection/distribution...

Anyway a big congratulations to the Big Dry crew....

Yesterday I took in the North Country Angus Bull Sale...Northmont- Lee Humbert and Jim Fossum selling close to 100 bulls in their 21st combined sale at the Glasgow Montana Stockyards....For awhile I thought maybe Lee had learned Big Dry's rainmaking secret for getting sale crowds--but all we ended up with was some snow flurries...

Bulls looked good- bulls sold good...An enthusiastic crowd...
My rough figures has Lee averaging close to $2600 on 44 bulls and Jim averaging $2100 on about 49 bulls...

Top bull was Northmonts Lot 9-- H A R Peerless 8311 #16260562 a Humbert Onward 6415 son (mgs Humbert Newsmaker 1801)which sold to the Yeager Ranch for $5250..

Yeagers also bought Lot 1 Humbert Hi Line 8667 # 16224569- a Master Guru 5629 son out of a HAR Harlem 2207 sired cow for $3250
and Fossums Lot 164 F A R Emblazon 164 # 16197986 a BH Emblazon 001 son (mgs Roth Traveler 9519) for $4250...

Several other multiple buyers with Ray Garber and Ben Lee Danielson buying about a half dozen apiece...

Jim also sold all his replacement heifers as commercial, since he says he is cutting back some.....115 Heifers sold in lots of 10- bringing between $710 and $790....

Congratulations to Lee and Jim on a good sale and some good bulls/heifers...

Also got a chance to talk bulls and cows with Horseless after the sale...He had purchased some of those nice looking heifers...

Oldtimer,
It was good to visit with you at the sale, wish I had more time to visit longer. It is good to meet the people I visit with on here finally in person.
I bid on a couple heifer bulls, but stop short of getting any. I looked the heifers over this morning, as it was dark when I got home. I stayed in town a little longer and had dinner with Jim and Lee.
It might just work to have these new heifers carcass ultrasounded this afternoon as I am scheduled to do that today.

Yep-- Lee and Jim usually have a good choice of bulls that will work on heifers...
Here's AAA's writeup on the sale...
