THANKS To everyone for their advice! I corralled the bull this mornin' and hauled him to my vet. His diagnosis was a new one for me. Where the absess was dripping was actually two finger sized holes. We assumed it could mean he'd punctured himself on a dead cedar. After the ultrasound the vet decided it was just like Pigeon Fever in horses. Something had caused an infection of his lymph nodes along his belly which had plugged up spreading the swelling into his sheath. He cleaned the absess pocket and stuffed iodine gauze up in it to disinfect. Then because the swelling wouldn't allow the bull to retract his penis, he manually did it for him. To protect it from damage and drying out. Then put a suture of prolapse tape through the end of the sheath to hold it up till the swelling subsides. 50cc of Nuflor for infection IM and 10cc Banamine interveinous for a mild fever. Cost me $153 bucks. A lot of ya will get to say I told ya so if he goes to heck on me. I went this way because the bull is fine flesh. The sale barn isn't selling till Tuesday and I didnt want him waiting on treatment that long. And I'm hard headed and can do as I dang well please! The Vet thinks he'll be just peachy. I gotta remove the guaze on Saturday and give him some more antibiotic. If his sheath looks good the suture comes out then too. If not then on Monday!

The final result of our effort. The pink stuff is just an topical wound dressing. Thanks again for your input. I hope ya don't think I ignored ya! :D I just am a hard headed Dutchman who likes to crash and burn!

It all boils down to doing what you're most comfortable with :D  . I kept a bull with a torn prepuce once who healed up and bred cows for a few more years. Good luck with him however it turns out!

Yep- and years ago I kept a couple of bulls that got seeds/weeds/grass in by their tool that had infected- and healed back up- and they both ended up with scar tissue that the vet said may prohibit the breeding season when tested in the spring.....
Since then- they are gone--even if/and especially if they are good herd bulls...Good replacement bulls are too cheap to play around with- and I would rather proliferate the cattle world with problem free cattle than those that have problems.....

So he actually didn't hurt the penis. Just the area ahead of it, and the swelling from that was causing the trouble. That was worth checking out. I'll put my money on the vet's opinion and bet the bull will be fine. 8)

Hey you got a good vet. One of our vets here tells after doing the his vet work to get rid of the bull and he convently has some for sale himself.

Since you have him up better get his feet trimmed.

He needs a foot trimming! He came from the higher country up around the Wyoming line in good mountain soil. Sure can tell those feet havent been in the rocks very long! :D But after he gets over his swelling and i wait for the antibiotic residue to pass, he is going to the sale barn. Probably around the first or Feb. when prices slip up a little.

Good work H, not lookin' to start a fight with any advice others have offered....but we as Rancher's are stewards of God's creations, be it land or animals. As stewards, it's our responsibility to diagnose our animals' problems and whether that leads to a cure or just their relief from pain & time to heal before their ultimate end, is only just ethical treatment.

FWIW, I think your a responsible steward of your stock.

Thats about the only Angus bull around that doesn't have his penis hanging out. You could let him even run in the rose bushes.

Hey, that gives me an idea. I think I am going to get into cosmetic surgery for black bulls.... i'd make a killing!

I believe I would trade my bear tag and a chance at a long prison term for guiding without a licence for that setup.
