bulls

i'm just guessing that these are commercial bulls? if that is the case, what information about them does the seller provide for you? in other words, how do you know what you are getting? not that EPDs are bomb proof anyways :wink:

They are all commercial bulls. The first five I bought are all results of AI, and the sires are reputable with high-falutin' pedigrees. Five of the other six are half brothers out of the same sire, and they are 3/8 Maine-Anjou 5/8 Angus. Their offspring will be 3/16 Maine and 13/16 Angus. I can probably live with that. The last bull is straight Angus and might be the best bull of the 11. He is out of an AI sire, but that sire couldn't be registered because of a technicality of some kind.

That 3/8 Maine 5/8 Angus is one of my favorite crosses! My cousin has run more than a couple of those bulls to great results. Whatever your doing, keep doing it. Your calves show how successful you have been! :wink: And I'm not sucking up! I think you do a fine job of standing around while Peach and Kosmo and Sunflower do all the work! :wink:

Soap, would you keep track of those Maine bulls and sell all the heifer calves or have you got some in your cows?

This is the first I've tried it. If the heifers look like good cow material, I might keep some and see what happens. The bulls really look good, and have a bit more width and thickness than straight Angus.

I've seen a few cows that were 1/4 or less Maine. They were too big for what fits here. Maybe the Angus side was big too. They make for nice feeder cattle though.

The steers vary from 560# to 600#, depending on the year. We about always keep over the biggest and best heifers to winter and breed. Our best year ever, for both weight and price, was 2004. Every steer calf on the place averaged 624# @ $124.70 per cwt, to bring $783.50 per head. That year we sold the biggest heifers and the smallest heifers, and kept the middle 35% for replacements. The heifers we sold in 2004 weighed 612# and brought $113.60, ($695.00 per head). That year really spoiled us, and neither weights nor price have been anywhere near that good since. :? :roll: :wink:

Dale and Karen Bowlin south of Cody raise some nice Maine and Maine cross cattle. I plan to breed these five half brothers to a certain set of cows so that it will be easy to determine what the calves look like.

I'll bet you are pleased with them. They really carry their muscle down into the hocks and square up the rafter butt Angus calves can have. Good luck.
