Buying a Scale

I am going to buy a scale. Time is a restriction here, as we are weaning in about a week. I can pick up a Reliable Scale at a local store, and from what I have read, and heard about them they sound OK to me. I have also gotten info on Norac, and Mass Load. Norac would be good also, but not as easy to get ahold of. I have used a Tru-Test scale in the past, and I won't be considering one of them.

So, has anyone used the Reliable scale? What do you like about them and what do you hate?

What about other brands (available in Canada) Good, bad or ugly, I would be interested in what you have to say.

What is the problem wtih Tru-Test?

Gallagher makes a pretty nice set of scales.

The one I used is terribly slow. There is no hold button on it, and so far the service they have recieved has not been good.

I'll have to check into gallager, although I haven't heard of their scales before, so they may not be easily available up here.

Is this for just your own use or will you exchange money over it???
Be prepared no matter the scale for some maintance.
And remember with cattle they will crap on it so have some way of cleaning out the poo...
Do you want an electronic monitor and printer.. Some are pretty fancy and do alot of differant things for you... Check em out. And they need to be kept out of the weather. Cold is not good for them.....
How many load cells are you going to have... Or are you just going to have a bar and weights???
Do you want to convert to weigh trucks or other than livestock?

If I were buying a new scale, I would get one that is going to work with the electronic ID systems. Now don't get all excited about the E-ID issue all you Bull Sessioners. If you are keeping your records on your cattle, the E-ID works good. There are two outfits doing it all on their own and claim that it cuts so much record keeping time after the job is done. You can do it all at the chute.

And I think Tru-Test is one of the major companys dealing with the issue. I will agree that they can be slow, but they are a good scale with good load bars. That is the main thing with these scales is to make sure the load bars are stout enough to hold up to the abuse. Especially if you are mounting them under a chute.

Thats my 2 cents

Well, I went ahead today and bought the Reliable scale. There are locals that have this brand and from what I have heard it is a good scale, and relitively trouble free. It is electronic, and is E-ID compatible, which will come in handy in the future. For now I don't have any way of using that feature, but we are already using RFID tags, so that is a useful feature to have.

The scale will mainly be for our own use. We may sell privately, but we use $/animal rather than $/lb so other than for a reference (i.e. approx 650 lb animals) so, that won't be an issue.
