Any of you southern folk been hearing the buzz about the Cactus Moth? It is expected to hit Texas sometime in 2008? It has been talked about a lot recently. Just got an interesting article e-mailed to me yesterday about the little bugger. Could possibly really effect the 19 species of Prickly Pear cactus across the state of Texas. Could possibly eradicate it completely which would be very devastating to several other species of wildlife...birds and insects that depend on the cactus for survival.

Well I can see that not many of you are to concerned about the demise of cactus.....Well, you'll be singing a different tune when you don't have a cactus to get bucked off in or you can't enjoy some nice Cactus Pear Jam!!   :P

I have mixed emotions. Not necessarily about the moth but about the extinction of species. Should we be intervening or should we let nature take its course as it has for eons with species coming and going (like the dinosaurs did.) I don't like the thought of a species being irradicated. Yet...is it not artificial to enforce a balancing act?

I personally vote for not gettin bucked off in cactus, 'tain't much fun, I'll allow that!   Kinda brings tears to yer eyeballs.......

I figger if they're meant to be here, they'll survive. If not, then something better will take their place. It's like the derned tree-huggers we have here.......want to save ever freakin species there is, even if it means the livlihood of other folks. My DMIL recently remembered a billboard that was on the highway back a few years ago. It showed a pregnant elephant, and a pregnant woman. The caption said "Which is the endangered species?"

The tree-huggers made them take it down, and it was about abortion.......

They don't care about anything but their own dadgum agendas........ :x

My appologies for hijacking your cactus moth thread, Tibbs........it just gets me kinda hot under the collar, ya know?

Hey, how bout some puppy pics, ya haven't shown us any in a long time, and I bet those little guys are growing up so fast........and we're missing it all! :?

yeah I hear exactly what ya'll are saying about it. But from what I understand these moths were accidently introduced to the area and now are just spreading so it isn't exactly "nature" taking its course....humans sorta caused it. I agree with you tho on nature taking its course.

Oh and Ranchy yes the pups are full grown and I kept one tho so I will have to get some pictures of her shortly.....one went to my sister and the other one i sold.

Ok I'd care if I knew how good Cactus Pear Jam was....can you send a taste to Canada :pretty:

Mrs. Greg, Prickley-Pear Jelly is to die for..............if it's made right, otherwise, it's not all that great.......lol

Tibbs, I think Feisty is a good name for a Corgi, from what I've seen of the breed, that name fits like a good glove! :D

So, don't keep us in suspence- describe how cactus jelly tastes!

The fruits are good just to eat too.. Kind of remind me of a strawberry Kiwi mix or something like that... They sold them at a store in Bozeman when I lived out there for a short time, along with the pads from the plants (Taste like green beans if you steam them)..

We have tons of Prickley Pear on this place but the fruits never get to big.. The deer hit them hard though..

that was about the best description anyone can come up with for how they taste! Strawberry kiwi is about right.

ok hi some of you may remember me, but I am thinking I want to make some jelly, do any of you have a recipe for prickly pear jelly? Do you use the lumps from before during or after they bloom? Jersey Lilly? Ranchy? Anyone?
??? :???: Hope you can help me out thanks

I remembered us talking about it on another thread and hoped somebody knew...

I was wondering what brought this thread back. :D

I would have to talk someone into making it if i picked them. Might as well as the Juneberry/Saskatoons don't look good this year. :x
