Calf Blanket

One year we bought a couple calf blankets at the Central States Fair, we thought they looked like such a good deal. They must have had wool in them or something, because as soon as you'd get one on a calf the old cow would tear into it like she thought it was a coyote or something. Even a coat made out of totally synthetic materials upsets some of our old black cows.

djh, welcome. I am curious why you need a calf blanket?
Calving during extrem cold, windy or wet weather calves get to cold to servive outside so they need to be put in a barn hopfuly with their mother. We have had bad enough winter storms where their are so many cold calves that if we blanket ones that arn't to bad and get in the wortst ones we maybe able to save more and they don't have to be taken from there moms if she will not follow her to the barn. We have a calf sled we put the calf in, pull behind the pickup and most of the time mom will follow to the barn. If the cow is seperated from her calf sometimes they do not claim them then we have to try to get her to accept the calf or bum him.

Calve later............avoid the whole mess

They are calling for 17 deg at my house Thursday morning. I will have to take the day off and fix pipes as they bust in the afternoon. That way too cold for me.

35 below with a minus 46 windchill.

Enough already!!!

I think I'm going to make one too. We calve early, and sometimes we get a surprise that's not up at the barn. If I'm alone I'm not strong enough to get a calf to the barn by myself. This would do the trick.

We have no choice of calving time. None of our pasture is at home, so we'd just as soon have everyone on the ground safe and sound before pasture time. Can't drive 40 miles to put in an eartag. It's just not practical.
