With 10 inches of snow I'm thinking the barn might be a pretty nice place for those new calves. Do they have an open front shed to get in or are they in the open?

Yep, I agree, snow and newborns usually isn't a great thing. Once they are dried off good, and had a suck they will be pretty hardy so long as they have some sort of shelter.

thanks for the advice on calving..I put one calf in the the barn but it
died i guess it was to cold.the same cow lost a calf last year so Im
thinking of taking her to the sell barn . Do you guys thing this is the
right thing to do?

Thanks for the help

was the calf wet or dry?
I would ship her because she is costing you money.
Do you have a calf warmer? Love ours, it paid for itself in the first calf we saved with it. Has saved numerous calves since then.
Definately put them in the barn. We do that with both main herd cows and first year heifers. Better safe then sorry.

I know I baby mine to much but when you have less than 50 cow calf pairs it is easiy to do.

I'm not calving till April but we got 8" of wet snow and 30 to 50 MPH winds so all my cattle had access to the loafing barn. Whwn I go out to check on them about 1/2 will be in and the other half about 100' away at the round bales. Only one or two will have snow on their backs when I go out to check so they are spending most of their time under cover. If the weather is nice you won't find any inside.

If you have the shelter use it - - yes you will need to haul a little manure but that is a small price to pay for a more comfortable animal.

We like infrared heaters.

Being crazy January calvers, we've found some good results with them. If it's really really cold, like minus 25 or 30, we'll use them in the barn, and if it's not so bad, like only fifteen below or so, we put up temporary pens made from panel gates in the back of the big cow sheds. We'll buy really cheap tarps and tie them around the gates to make them windproof. Then we put a heater in the corner with a board across so the cow can't lean on it. Those calves pick up on this really quick. Sometimes we've had them born in some really cold weather, and the little guy's will just line up lengthwise right under the heater, and you'll see steam coming off their backs. They will find the heater themselves most of the time. Out of 190 calves last year, we only lost half of one ear, so it must work. :D

The cats like em too. :D :D :D
