Beautiful day again- 40 degree shirt sleeve weather....But it looks like we are in for a change tonite---Winter Storm Watch for MT., Dakotas, Canada... Supposed to be freezing rain coming in from Saskatchewan tonite turning to snow-- 4" to 18" depending on where you are......But temps remaining in the 30's for the rest of the year......

I'll take a little snow over cold anytime.......
 
45 F this morn,crazy weather for us, kinda scary whats gonna happen when the snow hits....cows still grazing, just started feedin horses other day,ya i do believe its the calm before the storm O.T
 
It's still better then the storm before the storm and the next and the next. Like we have had some years. A couple years ago you didn't leave home in the morning knowing that you could get home in the afternoon.

Not me I would rather have the cold than the snow.Snow just adds to the work load at least the cold can leave in a hurry snow makes for a sloppy mess.
 
Ot,

Which way is this storm headed? We could use some snow but i just checked the forecast for here and its talking showers.... :roll:

MR- I think they say its heading east- might be going south of you- but anyway the Mountains of Montana could get a foot or two of snow-- Here they are saying rain tonite and then snow all day tomorrow with about 4 inches accumulation.....Today was just beautiful-- Can't even get the cows to eat hay...I keep cutting back a bale every day- still want to graze- Life is hell :wink: :lol:

This is looking southwest up the Creek- trying to show how little snow and cows spread out everywhere to the hills grazing in 40 degree temps- this is the view I have seen out my south window for the last several days- the south side of those hills are bare :D ...

This might all be white tomorrow.....

The reason the cows would rather graze than eat hay-- Just so people don't think I lost it all when I tell of the green grass under the melting almost January snow.... This is in a hay meadow that has an alfalfa, brome, tall fescue and orchard grass mixture that seems to stay green under the snow-- that fescue and orchard grass will grow year around if its half way warm.....
 
Even if I didn't see your pics I woulda believed you O.T....you have more snow then we do but our hayfield also has green in it.Thats why our cattle still grazing
 
Got about an inch of sloppy wet snow during the night- predicting another 3 inches today- temps are hovering right around 32 degrees with little wind.. With the old snow and ice hidden underneath it makes walking in some places a little hazardous as I found out when I was packing in some grain to the young bulls........
 
Our cows are out on swath-grazing and we're lovin' it. The calves are growing like weeds and the cows are actually putting weight on. When we went over our feed analysis, the forage specialist said the only trouble we'd have with it, would be the cows getting fat. So it's pretty good stuff. There's enough feed to last until about the first of February, then we're gonna wean.

Great year to be a grazier. :wink: :D :D
 
Wierd -Wierd Weather...Ended up with only an inch of wet snow out of that last storm.....Then today was pea soup thick fog all day-- and now the weather boys are predicting freezing rain for tonite and rain for tomorrow...Seems more like the weather they normally get west of the Continental Divide....

Long range forecast says temps with highs in the 20 to 40 range and lows in the 10-20 range thru the middle of January...

The pessimist in me wonders what the full moon will bring in for the rest of January and Feb...
 
By the time that storm got over here it was rain. Pure and simple rain. We didn't get much, maybe a quarter inch. But *rain*, at the end of December? And it still didn't freeze, even last night.
Today was in the low 50s again...
 
We got home from our trek to Colorado late yesterday afternoon, with the last 8 miles being the worse---I bet we had 5+ inches of very wet snow (like a mountain snow rather than plains snow!) and probably got close to 5 more inches last night.

I think this wet snow will be a blessing--we were starting to get dry. I hope those in the southern plains of OK and TX get some moisture soon, as well as those in the southwest and Colorado!

I'll try and get a picture tomorrow of the wet, heavy stuff!!!

TTB, I'm not even jealous of your wonderful moisture.......when it comes as wet snow in Dec.! Give me a nice rain in April anytime........ as vastly superior to snow for filling dams and starting grass.

We got maybe an inch of snow overnight, after some rain......maybe .30". Drove to Presho (about 60 miles) today for highschool basketball games. Our little (every boy in grades 7-12 playing, to make a team with only 11 players, ranging in height from 4' 9" to 6' 4")Midland team lost by at least 20 points to Presho jv team, but had some interesting moments. The awsome Kadoka team was great fun to watch as they beat Gregory by about 30 points.

Quite a bit more snow just a few miles south of us on hiway 63 about to Murdo, then lighter. Roads pretty messy. Saw one 18 wheeler in the ditch on its side west of Murdo, and evidence of other vehicles having run off the road. Good to be in for the night and hoping drivers recognize the dangers and drive safely. Temp has been pretty close to the 28% to 36% are for about the past 24 hours.

Didn't get much out of this storm either-- little layer of ice and a skiff of snow on everything this morning, which is already melted off...Looks like most of it went to North Dakota and is headed toward Denny's country...

Yea we got 8 inches from this last little now they say were going to get a bunch more tommorrow I was going to push snow today but figured I could save fuel and do it when there's a foot or more I hate pushing snow biggest waste of time I've ever seen.On the bright side bet we have a heck of a hay crop next summer only 140 days till cows go to grass.
 
I've never seen so much water running in Dec! It's disgusting ... but we need the moisture. Forecast shows rain or snow for 5 out of next 7 days :?
