calves on green feed

burnt said:
I missed one heck of a deal on some dry oat hay lasst fall. A guy had a bunch of 5x5 bales of dry oats with underseeding mixed in a for $25/bale and while I dithered on it, someone else didn't. :?

Now I'm paying almost double that for hay. My own fault . . .

Those same bales here are going for 75-100 a bale and they were baled too dry with not much grain in them. Thank goodness we broke up hay land in 2008 and reseeded or we would have really been in trouble. We reseeded with a grass/alfalfa mixture and under seeded with oats and barley. I got lucky and doubled the amount of oats and barley that we usually would use, so we got a heck of a cut out of it. The girls are doing great on it and so are the replacement bulls. There is a lot of grain in them ,grinding denotes that unless you use an actually feed mixture and bunk or alley feed a TMR. You would lose all the grain and be left basically with straw. The problem with green feed is that some people bale it too dry .. JMHO
