I've started calving, and so far it has gone really well. The weather seems to be straightening back out :D .

The dogs and I Scourguarded the first sort. Mostly heifers were in the group.

Hungry heifers...when aren't they??? :D .

Bringing a calver in. The other heifers were telling her what was in store.

It only took me a good decade, and who knows how many miles running around my night lot to figure out how to set the panels up   . This view is looking towards the direction I bring them from.

Calf slumber party :-) . It snowed about 15 inches, and was pretty cold, so these newborns got to stay inside for the night.

The other calves were just fine during the storm in the shelter :D .

The neighbor's bull came to visit last spring for a ten hour stretch  . I aborted the four I knew got bred, but missed four others.

Aborted 4 and had 4 and the bull was in for 10 hrs.... Is your neighbors bull for sale?

No joke, I'll ask him. You know how those Herefords are  . I asked Jim why are we spending all this money on bulls, when we could just turn that bull out.

And Justin, we don't discuss that orange thing  .

That quad still looks good. Park it out front, no one will know it doesn't run. Calves are sure cute. You need a little advice on how to insulate your barn. :? :-) Good luck and stay safe.

Looks like the neighbor's bull threw some pretty nice calves! Probably not what ya wanted to hear, but i'll bet they weigh up good come fall. RBT

Looking good!!! I'm not going to show Mike the pictures of your barn...he'll be jealous. I see some of yours have calved too. thanks for the pics :)

Good pictures...I don't feel so bad about calving on pure white now- altho my barn is smaller and they get rotated in and out a lot faster...

so in that decade you spent running back and forth thru your corral - i would like to hear the story about the exact moment it came to you to set up some panels. that moment for me came while tripping over a frozen turd at my top speed and noze diving into the snow - got up with a broken toe.

nice looking set up and critters - were you AI breeding the ones you aborted or something?

I didn't explain that very well :? . I've used panels, just not set them up well in the past. Before, they were attached solid to form an alleyway...BUT if you missed getting them into the alleyway, they ran up the other side of the panels. Then you had the fun challenge of bringing them back down the panels, and bending them into the alleyway. I finally learned to have an opening no matter which side of the panels they go down  :D .

Back to the Hereford calves, the bull jumped in a good two weeks before I planned to turn bulls out, and I aborted them to avoid calving in January. Little did I realize there was nothing short gestation about that bull, and these calves actually came up to two weeks past their due dates. In hindsight, I should have just kept them bred. So far they seem to be nice terminal calves.

Your babies look great! I'm like Nicky..wish we had a barn like that to calve in...ours is nice but much smaller...our heifers are almost done that were AI'd...got the rest from the cleanup bull for later...so sorry ya got all that dang snow..we're lucky and don't have any...YET! Don't cha just love this time of year with all the babies??

Looks like your calving is off and rolling in good shape. You have a nice set-up for cold weather. How would barn builders have any business if everyone calved only in the warm times of the year? :-)

Looking good WR.

9 ft. of snow...... don't know how anyone can ranch in that.. :P

Well you just gotta be tougher than most  :P .

Actually the wind blows most of it into piles, so the ground is open part of the time. I think we're still in an El Nino pattern, so it may be very interesting after the 20th of March! Jim likes to drag out the pictures from the late 70's, early 80's to show me what it looks like when it "really snows" here.

Better stock up on plenty of chocolate and Mountain Dew just in case :D .
