When you say ' about to ' have a calf, this leads to another question & a better question is what is SHE doing?


YOU probably will have to do nothing.

When you see one or two hooves protruding from the vagina, you'll know it won't be long. :wink:

Leave her alone. If you want to watch her do it frim a long ways off.
 
You can generally tell when the cow is uncomfortable. She may start to hold her tail up a bit and she will probably increase walking around or she may lay down and get up often. Her vaginal area will get dilated and her udder should get tight. When you see the two feet ou,t the calf shouldn't take too long after that. I would say anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending from cow to cow. If you do not see progress in that time frame you should call a vet to make sure there aren't any problems!:)
 
One more thing......that is if she hasn't already had the calf.......make sure the feet are not upside down.....if they are then that means you have a backwards calf......you MUST get him out fast b/c the cord will break inside the cow and his head is still inside......he could/prob. will suffocate if you don't work fast enough and pull him out.........we just lost a bull calf b/c we were to late to get the cow in the pen to help :(
