I don't have much experience in that kind of country but we were at some friends at Valleyview/ Sunset House and dug some of those river clams. Been a while but they were down in the sand and had to be dug. I think they needed to be put in a pan of shallow water with corn meal or something to flush their system out to make them taste the best.

Surely somebody in that country would know. :?

Thanks BMR, sound's like they might be edible then anyway's. This was a new river for us, I have never noticed them in the creek's/river's closer to home, am sure it's just a matter of talking to the right person sometime:)
