Canadian Farmers To Receive C$1 Billion In Aid

Help Support Ranchers.net:

Before you R-calf wanna be ranchers start grumbling about this on here. I would like to remind you that the news story does not state that over 40% of this money will be ate up in administration costs. That leaves $600 million. Now when you split that over all of the farms and ranches in Canada that doesnt amount to more than a pile of frozen beans!

Also remember that if the border opened on March 7, cattle producers would not be getting anything. All programs are designed to stop when the border opens. This is just going to make us less reliant on the U.S. and more competetive on the world market.

Wow! This is great but like MR says, how much actually makes it into the hands of the people who need assistance? How many farmers and ranchers will be elgible for this payment? Depends on how they work there pay out. I'll believe it when I see it and I can deposit the money into my bank account.

And for all of you (those low production cost farmers/ranchers) who oppose this, why don't you go add up your expensens and debts for the last two years and see what type of dollar amount you come up with......then times it by about 5 or 10. Especially people that dont have the costs of working thru a tuff 6 month winter with an excessive fuel bill, people who can pasture (or think they can) cattle for 12 months out of the year, etc.

Helpful as it will be, this is just going to be another drop in the bucket! I dont understand why Canada wouldn't have started to support these large industries from the start. Maybe if they had of, there wouldn't be the amount of debt occured against each dollar borrowed now.

There is no question that the Farmers and Ranchers in the cattle and grain industry need some help but the government is a day late and a dollar short. I'm surprised they withheld this information so long from the public.

How many of you Montana, ND or SD farmers and ranchers are going to bellyache and cry over this? Probably just as many as who helped caused this situation in these industries.

If this helps keep the border closed so we in the states can keep our good prices why would we bellyache?-- This is what Canada will probably end up with in the long term anyway--socialized cattle industry-just like the socialized grain industry...

OT,

This kind of attitude gives the Canadians more incentive to test those animals of 21 months to get the asian/Japan markets. I hope you enjoy your high prices and I hope everyone in the states can eat a hole lot of beef. Maybe Canada will smarten up and close up our border to the US and there questionable beef.

I dont see why the government doesn't support the Agriculture industry more, not just financially. Any Canadian or American that has received a subsidy should know about this and shouldn't complain.

You Gripe when you don't get any money and you gripe when you do. Whoa is you..

Hat -

Don't go gettin all "Nebrusker" on me now. I don't gripe! I'm simply saying that if they had of implemented some type of system for pay out sooner, there wouldn't have been such a large hole to dig us out of. This will definetly provide aid but prior to this announcement there (government/ag minister) choice in time to start "saving" the industry doen't leave much opportunity for the farmer/rancher that is already in the hole. Do you understand what I mean?

Speaking hypothetically, If you borrowed money to pay tuition and buy books for college and there is interest due on that money and you can not pay for it, then I come along and tell you that I'll help you out with 2 books, 2 years later......It just doesn't seem to correct the problem.

A fine upstanding protectionist such as yourself pointing at anything and calling it socialist is hilarious!

U.S. Gal you should use a better example for hat He dont know anything about tuition, college and the likes of that stuff.

U.S Gal you should use examples like this.....If bert borrowed money from ernie and couldnt pay him back and big bird loaned bert money two yrs later etc.etc.

The 1 billion dollar Farm Income Payment Program includes a general payment of 841.5 million to all producers with grain farmers receiving 55% and cattle and ruminant producers receiving 18%.

In addition to that 18% cattle and ruminant producers will share $155 million in direct payments based on their inventory as of Dec. 23 2003.
(Ironic choice of dates?)

Looks like about $300 million for cattle, sheep, goat, elk, buffalo and whatever producers.

KEEP THE MONEY AND BUILD A BIG PACKING PLANT WITH TESTING OVER 30 MONTHS!

Everytime our government announces a program I feel a special kinship with my American brothers.

Northern Rancher-- How much of all this money do you think will make it into the pockets of producers like yourself-- I see 90% of this going to the Cargills, Lakelands and their corporate owned feeding operations...That does resemble the US because every time they come out with a farm program the bulk of it ends up funding Texas or Cactus Feeders corn operations or a Georgia cotton conglomerate....

Looks to me like this could be more funds for the multinational corporations to stick in their pockets to more quickly take over the new proposed Canadian packing plants when they open...

Didn't know ITT tech had a Ranching course! Is that where you're going to get your Ag. diploma Hat?

It just strikes me as pretty funny whenever there's an aid package announced there as flurry of denials from everybody that they might actually get some money or that it might do some good. Kind of like Clinton smoking pot but not enhaling lol-I received a support cheque but I didn't spend it. I've taken a big enough bath over this deal that if they have some coin for yours truly I'm taking it-got 4 kids, a wife and 500 head of cattle kind of feel the same way.

I guess you would know all about a socialized grain industry...considering you get paid to grow barley ,but don,t actual have to grow it.
But I forgot you don,t have subsidies.... you have programs
Good luck Dick

All I know, is my accountant and I were discussing this wonderful new handout, and he told me based on our numbers, not to expect a whole hell of alot. Wasn't too surprised. The media builds it up to make it sound so great, but in reality the average farmer or rancher will get a pittance. We'll take it but only because a little is better than nothing.
