Cargill completes Beef Packers acquisition

by Pete Hisey on 4/4/2006 for Meatingplace.com

Cargill Meat Solutions announced that its acquisition of four California meat companies, now doing business as Beef Packers Inc., has been completed.

The company originally announced the acquisition in September 2005. The four companies were Beef Packers, Inc., Fresno Meat Co., RPM Beef Inc. and King-O-Meat Inc. A fifth company, Ore-Cal Transportation, was originally part of the deal, but will be dissolved instead.

J.B. Hunt Transport Services and HR Livestock Transportation will be responsible for the trucking of live animals and chilled beef.

For the life of me, I just can't understand why Cargill would invest even more money into such a low-profit industry.

Profits are not synonymous with size. They are synonymous with excellent management. These are value added processors which is the very direction that Cargill sees the future of this industry and where the greatest opportunity exists to improve profit margins.

Agman, I agree...just pocking fun at someone that believes profits and efficiency is synonymous with size instead of excellent management. Just wish these companies hadn't given in to the consolidation...but I know, money talks! :(

And where they getting the money from? Oh right, it costs $180 to remove SRMS. Perhaps they have a profit margin built in there and they sock that away in a rainy day GL account.

You know, Rod, if they are paying $180 for SRM removal to one of their own subsidiaries, then according to some of these packer backers the profit from that subsidiary can not be counted as packer profit.

RM: "And obviously small, inefficient packers with no hope of turning a profit!"

Obviously a handful of small packers with niche markets can survive OR THEY WOULDN'T EXIST.

What they lack in efficiency they make up for in ADDED VALUE. Niche markets are a very small part of the industry which is why such a large percentage of the fed cattle are slaughtered by 5 major packers.

You packer blamers can't ever argue at word value can you?
