I stole this from another website talk forum...Don't know anything about the veracity of the content altho the poster is a known cattleman and signed his name....Maybe some of our readers know more... Anyway this decision by the National FFA leaves much to question..... :(

------------------------

Most people who visit this site are directly or indirectly involved in the production of beef. I think it is important that everyone knows of a current situation involving country singer Carrie Underwood and the National FFA organization. The National FFA convention is taking place this week and they have paid Carrie Underwood $100,000 to perform on Wednesday night. The concert is sponsored by RFD TV. So what's the situation you ask?

Well if you didn't know, Carrie Underwood is a vegetarian and a very outspoken one at that. She has publicly admitted that she wants to end animal agriculture. In fact, she has been quoted as saying, "Eating meat weirds me out" and she said she would much rather to sing to cows than eat them."

She is both an advocate and financial supporter of the Humane Society of the Untied States (HSUS) whose direct mission is to abolish animal agriculture and end hunting in this country. The Center for Consumer Freedom reports HSUS's true mission is to spend millions on programs that seek to economically cripple meat and dairy producers; eliminate the use of animals in biomedical research labs; phase out pet breeding, zoos, and circus animal acts; and demonize hunters as crazed lunatics.

I think Trent Loos stated it best, "Does anyone that helps with fund raising for an organization that is openly against food animal production qualify to perform to our nation's premiere agricultural organization?"

I hope all would agree, the answer is no. I am not saying a person can't be a vegetarian. After all, this is America. But why would an organization whose mission statement is to be dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education choose to pay someone to sing who opposes animal agriculture.

I am thankful though that there are a lot of people taking this serious. There has been a movement that was started at South Dakota State University for FFA members to attend the first two portions of the concert and walk out when Underwood is introduced. I hope that stadium is completely empty.

Truthfully,

Zebadiah Gray

P.S.

There was an incident in Nebraska where she suggested to a crowd that everyone should convert to a vegetarian diet after she was outraged that there was chicken offered in her vegetarian buffet. The event was called Comstock and was held in the middle of a pasture. The crowd properly responded by "booing" her off the stage. Maybe that wasn't the wisest choice considering cows outnumber people in the state of Nebraska.

From Wikpedia:

Carrie Underwood is a vegetarian and stopped consuming beef when she was 13. She was voted "World's Sexiest Vegetarian" alongside Coldplay frontman Chris Martin in 2005 by animal-rights organization PETA.

Carrie Underwood is a supporter of the Humane Society and has done several public service announcements for the organization.

And the FFA National Convention Website lists her as the lead performer at the convention appearing Wed. night......

I found this from a December 2005 interview on cmt.com.

15. How can you be associated with PETA since you grew up in rural Oklahoma? They do not like livestock shows, rodeos, hunting and fishing. These are the activities that define us as Oklahomans.

That's a good question. I don't think those things define us as Oklahomans. I think that the way that we are in our personality and in the morals that we have, I think that defines us Oklahomans. Livestock is definitely a big deal in Oklahoma. A lot of my friends were in FFA and stuff like that growing up. ... I just choose not to eat animals. That's it. I'm not really associated with PETA. If they're doing a spay-or-neuter campaign, I'm all for it. I'm not really for so many radical things. I think there's just an easier way. I don't preach to others about it. This is just the way I am. If you were sitting there next to me, eating a steak right now, I wouldn't say anything about it because that's your choice, just like it's my choice not to eat it.

16. When did you become a vegetarian?

I quit eating beef when I was somewhere between 10 and 13 because we do have cows and I did bottle feed them and stuff like that. They were like my pets. I had an incident one day that made me refuse to eat beef ever, ever again. Later on, my neighbor had pigs, and I thought they were cute, and it just kind of went on and on from there. I phased it out over a period of time. My parents were actually banding calves. I don't know if you know what that means. I'm not going to explain it to you. ... Basically, it was to make them grow bigger so people could eat them, and they were so cute, and it just made me sad.

Earlier in the interview, the interviewer was concerned that she was leaving her Oklahoma roots for Nashville, because he was also from Oklahoma. Wonder if he is still feels that way?

I don't think this is entirely true. My boss was there and told me about it. I can't remember the details, but she didn't tell the crowd to convert. She did mention that she didn't eat meat and got booed for that - but not off the stage. She still performed. All of the performers after her made sure to mention that they just had a great Nebraska steak (which they were cheered for) - so it got played up a bit.

you are right Sandhusker, she still performed and all the other artists including Brooks and Dunn made sure to make a point to tell the crowd they had big ol steaks for supper. i dont see her being a returning artist to the Windmill Festival, thats for sure.

I was there and she did not get the reception that the other groups got. Crowd really got into the others and she stood there and sung mainly. Papers were passed around urgging people to walk out ans some did.

Had Carrie Underwood mentioned concerns about BSE in Canadian cows, she'd have found a friend with R-CALF.

So now you are the self proclaimed spokesperson for rcalf? You sure seem to think your $100 goes far there, SH.

Oh we have to cut him a little slack, Econ-Besides the $100 he donated to R-CALF, he also held the recruiting record for several years.... His and MRJ's non-arguments/attitudes did more to help R-CALF recruitment than almost any other two people.....

econ i think if you set aside your dislike of sh for a minute he was completely right that a couple of r-calf minions would have been praising her to the heavens if she'd declared canadian beef dangerous to the american population.

They would have been hypocrits on the bse issue if they did not support private testing as potenially a $20.00 test/ head could allieveate this concern.

They would stll have had a point when it comes to concentration issues and the undue power the packer place on industry policy in both Canada and the USA.
