Chinese Cat Lovers Halt Truck Hauling Cats to Restaurants
Tuesday , July 10, 2007

SHANGHAI, China — AP

Chinese cat lovers mobilized online to save a truck load of cats from the cooking pot, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

Veteran Shanghai cat rescuer Duo Zirong started off her mission of deliverance on Friday when she called police to stop a truck stuffed with some 800 live cats, the China Daily said.

The standoff happened at a parking lot in a southern suburb of Shanghai. It continued for hours while cat lovers spread word of the incident online, eventually raising $1,320 in donations to buy the whole load.

They now hope to place them in homes after posting their pictures and profiles on the Internet.

"They were so frightened," it quoted one of the rescuers, Huo Puyang, as saying.

"Some bit people when they tried to let them out of the boxes. Some still hide in dark corners and will not come out for food," Huo said.

Cat meat is considered a delicacy in southern China and cats are sold live to markets where they are slaughtered fresh for customers.

I'm looking at our cats and don't see a whole lot of meat on them. Say I'm having a dinner party and need to feed 6 people. How many cats will I need? Is it cost effective to fatten them up? Is any breed better than others?

Just from their attitudes I would suspect Siamese would be a little tough and gamey tasting...

When I was working in saudi there was a chinese restaurant outside the gate we would go to eat at. One day we were working late and had to order take out after hours I was the unlucky soul to pick it up. The alley was chock full of cat bones and cats eating on the left over cat pieces. I had eaten dog before but there was just something disgusting about eating a cat.

when i was a kid we used to firehunt rabbits and sell them in town, some boys started selling cats and when it got out we had to leave a foot on the carcass.just about the only way to tell after theyre skinned.
