I've got a question. I have noticed cattle acting just crazy when they find a new pile of dirt. I scraped out a pad for a water tank today and piled up the dirt and my cows are acting like a cat on catnip!! I tried to upload some pictures, don't know if it worked or not. I've seen other cattle do this before and never knew exactly why, anyone else know??
Just kinda wondered, P.J.

They probably act much the same as when they pass over an area where something has died. In fact, that is probably why they are acting foolish. Evidently the freshly dug dirt has smells of old dead dinosaurs. :-)

I only feed mineral in the winter, right now it's just a mineral block. It's not so much that they eat the dirt, it's the sillyness, playing, bucking, bawling and rubbing it all over their head. It's not just these cows, on this pile, everytime I've ever had a pile of dirt, either brought in or dug up, any cattle I've ever had, act like this. It's a riot to watch them.

Happy trails

If you dump a load a red clay dirt or gravel in the pasture around here, you'll be looking at red cows for a week or so. Especially bulls. :D

Same with young calves. They play "King of the Mountain" until the pile is scattered smooth.

I had a 20 yard load of sand dumped in the yard for the grand kids to play in when they visited this summer..................

Bulls got out one night and it is a pile no more.
