Disgruntled employee? I'd have thought the lead from a battery would pass on through. Heaving a tractor battery over the side of a feed wagon would be quite difficult.

We lost a few cows some years back, and found parts/plates of an old car battery they must have licked. They're very susceptible to ingested lead, and just go down like their legs gave out.
