Cattle ranchers hear concerns

Kevin Wilson, Quay County Sun

April 1, 2006

If beef consumption is rising around America and the rest of the world, why are American cattle growers making less money in the market? It's a question cattle growers wish they didn't have to ask, and a national organization tried to answer at an assembly Friday night.

The Tucumcari Convention Center was host to about 100 audience members, mostly ranchers, and representatives from R-CALF USA.

Stationed out of Billings, Mont., The Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, United Stockgrowers of America boasts 18,000 members and represents only cow/calf producers, backgrounders and independent stockers and feeders.

"We emphasize issues that affect the economic viability of cattle producers," said John West, a field coordinator for the organization.

Through R-CALF President Chuck Cochran, the group spent Friday night stressing to New Mexico cattle growers what it saw as dangers in unbalanced free trade agreements, national animal identification programs and country of origin laws, or COOLs.

Cochran said those outside the cattle industry have legitimate interests to protect in making a profit. Those interests include ensuring unrestricted access to cattle and a standard by which all suppliers would follow.

Cochran said he believes beef grown in the United States is the highest quality in the world, and any harmonization of standards would only help foreign cattle growers. The point of R-CALF, Cochran said, was to represent cattle producers and make sure they receive and keep a reasonable share of the beef market.

Cochran said the United States is competitive in the market, but unbalanced trade agreements have hurt U.S. producers. Cochran said a recent agreement was made between Japan and the U.S. in which Japan only accepts cattle younger than 21 months. In return, Cochran said the U.S. accepts cattle from Japan at any age.

"We're sitting here selling ourselves out," Cochran said. "We're giving up the best market in the world."

Cochran said another issue that could affect cattle growers is the possibility of a national animal identification program. The program would require cattle growers to tag each animal so it could be traced back to its home.

Cochran said he could see many health concerns that make a national identification program sound like a good idea, but felt a mandatory program would give cattle growers another program to pay for, without reaping any benefits.

Sam Britt, who ranches west of Clayton, said because New Mexico is a branding state, it already has an adequate tracking system in place.

"We've got a great identification program in New Mexico," Britt said. "It's nothing but more control for (the federal government and others)."

First lady visits Albuquerque

Laura Bush

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - First lady Laura Bush has chatted with students at an Albuquerque elementary school about the importance of making good choices.

She says that a lot of times, adults forget that they need to talk about alcohol and drug abuse with children.

Bush sat in on a second-grade class and a fifth-grade class at Bel-Air Elementary School Monday.

The students were learning about a Mothers Against Drunk Driving program called, "Protecting You, Protecting Me."

The fifth-graders questioned the first lady about everything from whether Area 51 is real to whether she has a private jet airplane or whether she gets to fly on Air Force One.

I just thought it was interesting that she made a surprise visit today!

I think R-calf has damaged the image of American beef when they spouted off about other countries and bse infected beef.

And many others "think" differently than you.

Thank God there are free-thinkers out there like those who started RCalf and are actually working for beef producers, not corporate interests.

Don't confuse "free thinkers" with "emotionally driven blamers".

How much intelligent "free thinking" does it take to risk the integrity of 80% of our U.S. beef consumption by lying about the affects of having BSE in your native herd (fear mongering) to stop the importation of Canadian cattle THAT WOULD HAVE ABSORBED AN EQUAL PORTION OF OUR EXPORT MARKETS EVENTUALLY?

That's not "free thinking" that is total lunacy!

I would settle for any kind of thinking with you, SH.

Play the Canadian card again, and again, and again........

Seems like you are constantly trying to decrease cattlemen's bargaining power. You like the packers having all the market power, don't you?

Conman: "You like the packers having all the market power, don't you?"

The packers don't have all the market power. If they did, they wouldn't have periods of losses. Something that's too difficult for a packer blamer like you to understand.

I like producers owning and controlling their financial destiny like the producers in USPB did. They don't have any packers to blame because they are the packer.

Any military strategist will tell you that you don't need to control the 100 miles of road, you only need to control the 100 yards of bridge.

Most of you folks will understand this, one or two (or one) will ask what roads and bridges have to do with packers and cows...

Sandbag: "Any military strategist will tell you that you don't need to control the 100 miles of road, you only need to control the 100 yards of bridge."

Any military intelligence to determine the number of bridges controlled will be based on the FACTS of the actual number of bridges controlled. Not on some flimsy fabricated number dreamt up by emotional blamers.

Hey, I needed to tell you, I totally get the Austin Powers thing. I can see how you can relate. Austin Powers is a complete idiot.

But he's shagadelic, Baby, yeah! He's grooving, he's switched on, he's got mojo!

Do you get the bridge thing yet?

Sandbag: "But he's shagadelic, Baby, yeah! He's grooving, he's switched on, he's got mojo!"

Haha! Well, I have to confess, you are in good company because I have a bunch of idiot friends who also quote Austin Powers. They're sick too!

Yeh, I get your bridge implication but the packers don't control the bridges like you think. They did in Canada because Canada had more cattle than slaughter capacity due to a closed Canadian border. That's not the situation in the U.S. Feeders can hold for better prices. Packers "sell it or they smell it". It's a fact!

Quit being such a defeatest Austin!

Double or nothing on the Aberdeen verdict? Come on, can't let your team down now.

You bet, SH. Feeders don't have to deal with packers. They can either feed the animal until it dies of old age or sell it to the pet store.

SH (previous): "Double or nothing on the Aberdeen verdict? Come on, can't let your team down now."

Sandbag (in response): "You bet, SH."

Wonderful! I didn't think you'd have the courage to accept the bet.

$100 from you to NCBA if Herman and Mike lose the court case in Aberdeen. Another $100 from me to R-CALF if they win the court case in Aberdeen.
That's good that you finally found some courage!

I'm not accepting your little bet, SH. I was pointing out the lunacy of your claim that feeders can simply hold on to their cattle for better prices.

Sandbag: "I'm not accepting your little bet, SH."

I can't say I blame you. LOL! I wouldn't bet on those guys either.

Sandbag: "I was pointing out the lunacy of your claim that feeders can simply hold on to their cattle for better prices."

Yet another deceptive spin job. I never said feeders always get better prices when they hold for more money. I simply pointed out the fact that feeders often do hold out for better money IN FALLING MARKETS even when it doesn't come. Then they sell for less and add more tonnage to the market.

You will contradict neither fact.

Nice strawman, SH. Wasn't my point though, was it? Those feeders still have to "cross that packer bridge" sometime, don't they?

What none of us would bet on after recent events is a judicial system that is anywhere near fair. Colorado is in a different circuit than the 11th, but it remains to be seen if the other circuits are as poor as the 11th.

Sometimes the cost of buying off a decision is just too costly.

The 11th circuit reversal would have cost Tyson their poultry ponzi scheme as well as the beef judgement.
