Changing calving seasons, part 2

I'm still wrestling with this idea. Here's another issue I have to address if I would calve later.

I have 100 hd of cows on share with a semi-retired neighbor. He's been very, very good to me. Our cow share agreement gives him 30% of the calf crop. If I'm calving later, his paycheck will be smaller assuming he sells his share at weaning. I plan on backgrounding my calves to make up for the lighter weights, but I don't think he is thrilled with the idea of doing that with his calves. We haven't discussed it much but that was the feeling I got.

It is important for me to maintain this partnership. Not only do I have his cows on share, I rent all of his grass (which my family shares a fence with for two miles), rent all of his hay ground, and graze his crop residue for a month or two in the fall/winter. Access to his land base is very necessary for my success.

The question is, what are some ways I could make this work for him too, besides talking him into backgrounding his share of the calves?

This thread isn't meant to bring up the pros and cons of later calving. I think I have a handle on that topic. I just would like some advice on the business end of this deal.

Put pencil to paper and show him what the cost difference will be show him both ways. I know that if I figure everything out on paper so I have facts and figures in front of them people see things differently. Show him what you are preposing as far as cost per day and what the price will be. I know that in the past we have made more money backgrounding our calves than if we would have sold them straight off the cow.

A couple of things worth considering...
Could you pay him part of his 30% in the fall based on Canfax pricing and finance the calves through a feeder association, then perhaps offer him an adjustment on price when the backgrounded calves sell?
This would also split his income for tax purposes, with some income coming early in the year so it can be allocated in government free areas.

How bout you two just meet at the Peace Gardens on the border, shake hands and get it over with.  I'm not sure which of you would have to drive farther, NR I would guess.

Could you switch to a straight cash lease per cow-they are much tidier to deal with. The calf share deal is hard to be a cost cutter under.

What's the going rate for cash lease? These cows aren't anything fancy, just a good functional set of cows. Quite a few young ones.
