The temps raised into the 40's yesterday- and last night the winds hit...Now have 40 mph WNW winds gusting to 60 (saw west of us where they had gusts to 76)....With temps around 40 the wind is really cutting the snow--and hilltops are baring and browning---but its almost impossible to walk around on the wet ice without the wind taking you down....

Warm and windy here too, OT. The draws have water running in them and most of the dams are alreay full. Won't be much left after this week, but sounds like after Thurs might be a cooldown again and chance to add more snow.

Meanwhile we will enjoy this weather while we have it! 8)

Not a chance of us loosing our snow by Thursdays cool down. I just hope some of our straw bunches get exposed before then. Been far too much tractor work done here this year so far.

Did you get any rain down south last night, Per?

No was there rain around? Clear skies here.

Ya, we got some heavy rain in Calgary, but not for very long, only for about 5-10 minutes.
Yikes, my niece rolled her truck sometime last night. Said it was slippery, I assumed it was in or close to Calgary.

She all right?
Yes she is OK. A good argument for wearing seat belts. I saw the truck being pulled out of the ditch on the news. My Cousin says they make trucks every day but it is impossible to replace daughters.

Melting like crazy over here. Wind hit us yesterday. Heard it was pretty bad up on the Blackfoot Reservation.
Got a small river running through the coulee behind the house.
the gates at the corral are frozen in ice. Gotta get my milk cow down there, luckily we can get her in the back gate.
Cleaned out the barn and found that it had a small flood in it. 3 of the 5 pens are soaking wet. Left the barn doors open to try and get it dried out.

This howling wind finally quit here...Still blowing and thawing out in the Missouri breaks....Supposed to have about 3 more days of temps in the 30's/40's--and then cool back down into the teens for a few days- which may help slow down any flooding...
Hopefully the nearly a week of 40's in the southern part of the county and breaks will get the creeks and streams from that area running good before the cooldown- and take away a major part of the flood problem on the lower Milk....

Saw it on 2 and 7 at 6:00. Seems it rained at Okotoks and High River. Not sure how we missed it. I wonder if it was a thunder type shower.

Glad your niece is OK, per.

We could sure use a few more days of melting or it is going to be awful rough on the cows feet and driving through the ruts in the snow. The water was running pretty good in places here today. Last night when we drove into Plentywood about 7pm it was 40F and at about 9:30 it was 42F.
My son is hoping it freezes up tonight so he can get a load of rig mud in the morning.

Wind is no longer howling over here. Suppose to be windy tomorrow and get colder on Thursday.
Getting the milk cow to the barn today.
Got the cows vaccinated for scours and moved to the calving lot.

Hubby and I were talking yesterday about building a new calving barn up on top of the hill.
Guess I better get to designing and planning.

Just need to move the horses and get the mineral feeder and lick tubs moved and we should hoefully be set.

Just hope we don't have to use the pick to get those gates open.
cows will have to get their water from the back of the barn instead of trying to walk on all that ice to get water.
Should be a fun year.

Your remark about building a calving barn on top of a hill caught my eye.
Why would you build a barn on top of a hill?

Ours is on a hill and we hate it there. It's not quite on top of the hill,
but enough so the wind really blows there, water drains right into it,
and you are usually looking into the sun in the morning when you
are working cattle. We didn't build it there, it was already there,
but we sure would never intentionally build it in that spot. Plus
it's hard to get to when it's muddy.

Hope calving goes well for you and that the worst of the winter is
BEHIND us!

FH when I cleaned the barn yesterday 3 out of 5 pens were soaking wet. It is built into a hillside.
Here is what our calving corrals look like right now.

No way to drain it. They tried a pipe, but it froze. And since it was PVC when the cows walked over it it broke.
this place has more headaches then it is worth. The hill is pushing it down. I'm waiting for the day we find it collapsed.
