!%#*& city people !!!!!

Imagine what he'd do to you if you drove across his lawn in town. There's an attitude that once you're "out in the country" anything goes. You can drive anywhere, throw junk out of the car, etc. Try that in town and see how far you get.

No Trespassing

The Sheriff's dept. and the State Police will patrol and arrest all violators !!!

Any off road vehicles ( ATVs, Go Karts, Mopeds, Dirt Bikes, etc.) will be confiscated and sold with the proceeds going to the Drug Task Force!

Hunting or fishing with express written permission only !

All others will be charged with trespassing. This carries a $1,000.00 bond !!!

I have these signs made - - - they come in two pieces with the No Trespassing in 6" Red letters - - - the other sign below in 1" black.

They are posted at all 5 access points and have helped- - - - but people still come to ask about hunting. I have a very select few that I allow to hunt. I feel one of the groups of Coyote hunters I have refused permission to must have come in anyway as someone shot and killed my pure white male German shepard at my barn about 3 weeks ago. I did not find the @$$^& but about 5 years ago my son was walking with the white male I had at the time and a neighbor shot and killed the dog and told my son he thought it was a coyote! My son almost went to jail for beating the man down and taking his gun!

You just can't fix stupid!

My sympathies on the abuse of your cow and loss of the calf.

It does seem reasonable that you should be paid for the value of the calf and the open cow. It doesn't really pay to keep one unless you can graft a good calf onto her, and cull value sure isn't her true worth if the calf hadn't been killed.

All the calls for violent action are troublesome, both from the aspect of finding better ways to solve problems, AND from the likely result being you in jail......or worse. Law enforcement people are there for a reason. Let them do the job.

I do agree I should have gotten the plate number , but i was pretty much in shock , I have not been at this very long , just 3 years and this is my first calf i have lost .. i do feel fortunate to have just lost one in 3 years, but i don't like how i lost the first one under these circumstances  I did end up getting a new calf this morning from a feedlot that feeds cull cows, the calf was born yesterday, yesterday after the calf died i put the cow and her calf in a pen overnight , went and picked up the new calf, came home , retrieved the dead calf, and rubbed her over the new calf to get the smell on the new one , put the new calf back in with Mom , but she was fooled for about a minute, so i tied the skin of the old calf on to the new one and that worked for about 3 mins, not long enough to let it suck.... I don't know if i did the right thing, ( i am open to help ) so now it's looking like I got a new bottle calf  ....But i am still fired up over that IDIOT and if i do ever see him driving around here , i will be helping his fancy new car into a ditch with my truck :!:

I'd try giving that cow some Rompum and while you have the cow in
the squeeze chute to do that, try to suckle the calf. Just about the time
you think it won't work it might!!

Or when the cow is in the chute, try milking her and get it into a bottle and feed the calf her milk. Anything that makes that calf smell like her,
helps.

When you skinned the dead calf and put it on the live one, did you
get the tail end? That is the most important part!
We've never failed to graft a calf when we skinned the dead one,
but you gotta have the tail!!

Good luck!!

Tough deal. Should have got his license and at least turned it over to authorities.

The funny thing to me on the thread is how tough everybody is. Anybody pause to think for a second that being a rancher doesn't give anybody a corner on the toughness market. Nobody ever considered the city boy might have been the one doing the ash kicking once the fur flew?

Here's a little gem for all you tough guys:

THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEBODY BIGGER AND BADDER THAN YOU OUT THERE.

FH is right about needing to have the back end and tail of the dead calf. If you watch cows sort their babies out of a crowd after they have been separated for processing or something, they will always sniff the tailhead of the calves until they find their own.

I did the grafting thing only once by skinning the dead calf and when the cow sniffed the graft, she checked out the tail. She looked a bit confused for a few minutes, but she took it and made it her own.

My success rate without skinning is considerably lower . . .

  Should he have thanked the idiot for killing his calf? Should he have put him in time out to think about his misdeed? Should he apologized for owning private property? His a little gem for you guys that don't want to break a nail or smudge your make up........... GROW A SPINE!!!! What is right is right! If the city guy was a 200 degree blackbelt and whopped me good, atleast I stood up for what is right. I guess you're principles are not as important? Unbeliveable!

you are wrong. we are the toughest form of human exitence. none tougher :D

What an a-hole.
I know the first response is to turn him into a puddle of crap but common sense comes through and you realize beating him into nothing is not worth the price of your place.

Now I would contact law enforcement regardless and report what happened. They might be able to help you find the jerk.
Now if you have a small claims court and you find that dip weed I would file against him for the cost of breeding your cow, loss of the replacement this calf could have brought you and trauma to you for watching the loss of this calf out of your favorite cow.

you know that even though the guy was in the wrong at least he was interested in ranching and had you taken the time to explain what was wrong he might have at least understood what he had done wrong and probably would have at least tried to pay for the calf in some way. I would have been angry too but I think I would have tried talking first.

I don't want to hurt any feelings here, but I've seen some of ya'lls pictures. LOL.

I am sorry about the loss of your calf. Not all city people are that way.

As for beating him ......yall can say you will do this, you will do that BUT when your face to face with the person you dont know what you would do.
As for bigger and badder yeap there are and getting your ash kicked and hurt and being laid up is NOT helping your ranch. Hail he prob has sick and vaction time and will not lose a dime.

Too bad you didnt get a pic of him in the field and his car tag.
Dont worry you did the right thing in the way you handled the situation.

Skinning a calf has been 100% successful for me. Something I discovered is glue the hide on as opposed to tying it on. I used back tag glue (the stuff used at sale barns). I run a small amount down the center of the hide and slapp it on the calf. You may have to dry the hide with a hair dryer to make the glue stick. Then, I also glue a patch of hide on top of the calf's head between his ears going down the neck. This is another place the cow will smell. This is a fantastic trouble free way to keep the hide on the calf. They'll lose it in 10 days or so.

Actually, I can skin a calf and have a real clean hide. No meat on it. It just dries up. Also, calving takes place during the coldest time of year around here. January, February, March. Not much opportunity for the hide to stink.
Especially this year. What a long cold winter we've had and are having. Freezing rain in the forecast for the end of the week. Just wanted to share the "glue" idea. I thought it might make a lousy job easier.
