I loved Gregs latest ad in the Montana Angus Journal advertising their upcoming March 22 sale...At the bottom of the ad he has:

This herd is FREE of and has NO 9J9- Precision, NO Fame-Focus, NO 315-036-New Design and NO Bando155- Bando 598 lines.

I can't wait to get his next catalog and read more of his philosophizing about raising cattle that work for you....Reading his catalog is worth it even if you aren't planning to go to the sale- as he doesn't mince any words..
.
I probably won't make it again this year- as we'll just be starting calving--but I think the son is planning on trying to get down there and look at the heifers in the sale...

I guess if it's ok toi brag about them when they are hot maybe the reverse is true-Alta had a Cole Creek Travel bull years ago-I think my neighbor still has a daughter left. I'll try get a pic.

Is his catalog on line?

Nope- this was in an ad in the Montana Angus Journal- but says you can request catalogs by calling Greg 406/962-3743 or by mailing:

Boy how and the heck have we made ANY money on our cattle?? We have 036,598, and some Objective.....

Ya- I've got a couple 598 blood cows- and Greg may be taking advantage of a situation- and using it for advertising--but it is a pretty good way to advertise your herd if you're smart/lucky enough to have that ability- and kept away from those genetic defect bloodlines...

Just like now- I know I won't buy anything with 598 or that old Barbara cow in its pedigree until they have the test developed and they are tested clean.. If I feel like gambling- I'll go to Vegas...

I just talked to a breeder friend (where I got the 598 bloodlines) the other day that wished he'd followed Gregs path --as he just got thru testing everything for AM/NH (and hasn't yet looked at the FCS) and had a herd built heavy around the Rito 9J9 and Dr J Analyst/Precision breeding- and is now having to sell quite a few of his old cows and some of his bred heifers that tested positive....And I know he has quite a bit of 598 breeding in his herd that he will probably have to deal with after all the bull sales get done- and they come out with a FCS test...

For most guys the amount of profit in a bull vs a fat steer is'nt much just take all those suspect cows and roll them into a commercial setting. We've got some that need testing most come from the same bull I'll get him tested if he fails I'll breed all those daughters to my commercial herd bulls. Most small breeders like myself really don't have those huge profit margins anyhow so if the chance to gain back all the test money is'nt there just breed her hereford problem solved..

Weather it be plants, mammals, birds or reptiles there will always be defects of some sort. I would'nt get my undies to knotted up over this deal it's not going to ruin the industry.

Yep-- thats what the neighbor is going to do with his cows/heifers that are positive..Sell them commercially- with open disclosure and the knowledge they are carriers- and that the buyer should breed accordingly...

My only concern comes from some registered cows/heifers I have that have Strategy back in their pedigree..If he tests out clean when the FCS test comes out- no problem...

But then with all the new genetic abilities they will probably just find another defect...I understand the "teeny weeny" dwarf is the next that will come up...

Kind of the reason I like using some of the old bulls that have been heavily linebred- or cattle from some of the linebred herds- that have stood the test of time- and with all the linebreeding/inbreeding should have shown any genetic problems- Some of which have been certified "defect free" because of the level of linebreeding..

I just look at the British royal family and wonder about the wisdom of inbreeding.

Hey Old Queenie's been around a long time...I saw an e-mail the other day where it pointed out she'd had an input on world politics longer than any other living person-- and showed her with all the US Presidents she'd met with- with the first being FDR.... :P

The Queen mother, nor the Queen seem to have suffered as result of being from the shallow end of the gene pool. Maybe the duds were culled. :D

I was wondering what was wrong with bando 155. I know he probably wasn't the thickest bull in the world but I had some grandaughters out of him that were darn good.
