Anyone know what the costs and procedure is to have a bull collected for my own tank. Just got a bull I really like on heifers and want to put some away to use until I find one I like better than him. He is 5 now. I know how it is collected, etc. But can a vet do it, or do I need to have someone from a semen company come do it and pay them to put it in the straws, and what kind of costs would I expect?

Last time I did it was several years ago at Select Sires in Tyler, TX.
I think they charged $100 to collect and $10 per straw to prepare the straws. I am not positive on those prices but that the best of my memory. A side bar to this story, I had the bull fertility tested by a local vet three days before we collected him because he was consigned to a bull sale. The vet said he would pass him, but he was marginal. When we collected him by the same method three days later, Select Sires said he was a very fertile bull. I had good luck with the semen and am still using it. :???:

Last time we had it we had 3 bulls collected one produced 100 straws the other 2 right at 200 straws each. Total cost figured out to $1.71 a straw. It was an on farm visit just not mine. The guy is from Iowa and has a route thru here about twice a year. He basically has a motor home/lab on wheels. I hauled the bulls over on a friday we jumped them I hauled them home and saturday morning I went and picked up the semen. I've got his number if anyone needs it.

If you take the bull to a collection stud the cost will be much less. The last bull I had collected we hauled him down they collected him and I hualed him home the same day. I got 287 straws and It cost alittle over 300 bucks.

Does anyone know if there is a mobile collection services that serves the north east. I think the closest collection point we have is ithica, ny around 500 miles 1 way :( :(

No the boys at most studs will domesticate him for you. The worst beef bull is nothing temperament wise compared to the dairy bulls. They were even collecting Trick or Treats a NFR bucking bull at Alta Genetics in Calgary.

The VERY best place to collect a bull is at Hawkeye Breeders near Des Moines Iowa. It is well worth going some extra distance.......if that is feasibel for you.

Yep it will take at least $1000 to get them collected and froze. I take them in and be home that day. The next moring I will know if it froze. Thats the gamble. Two different guys from here that never did that before did not understand some will not freeze. Not sure if they paid there bills yet. Kinda like vet comming out to fix a cow and she still dies...

Really be careful how much one needs do not get carried away. 100 units to some people is plenty. I heard one bull collected 800 units in one collection. Do not feel obligated to package everything the bull produces.
