Hello!
I'm currently a senior at Ohio State University and I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do for the rest of my life
As an Ohioan there aren't a TON of opportunities for me to gain commercial beef operation experience but I've grown up on a small farm where we do a little bit of everything including raising our own freezer beef and I have gained a little more experience through school.
This last summer I was incredibly fortunate enough to score an internship on a very, very large ranch in MT and while I loved it, I didn't get as much hands on experience with the cattle (which I knew would be relatively limited in the summer but had hoped more educational experiences than I got). Ranch work does not scare me, I've done all of the grunt work and long hours before.
SO. I feel like I need to gain more experience to be more attractive to employers but I'm not sure what I should make my next step. The only way to gain experience is to go out and do it so do you have any advice as to gaining more experience?
I was also wondering if a smaller operation would work any more closely with their cattle?
What are the most valuable skills you've found to have for ranching?
Anything you wish you would've learned about before you started ranching/working on a ranch?
My apologies for the novel and entry level questions. I'm just trying to get a grasp on reality lol
Thank you so much!
