colt feet problem

I've just bought a 5 month colt form a friend.Its a qtr. horse filley,she is in super shape execpt for her hooves.I don't know if its a lack of certain minerals or shes just rough.they are splitting on the bottom of the foot and cracking pretty bad.I feed her 10% of sweet feed daily about 1/2 gal.
I also have somr sheep that will try to eat with her and she will kick at them and hit the stall wall,but it seems mostly with her hind hooves with some in the front splitting also,but mostly in the hind.This is my first colt and I want her to have every fighting chance to have it all.Any help is appreciated.Thanks

TTB, How's things looking your way today?? Wind is darn cold today... All the critters are sunning themselves out of the wind here today.......

It's cool, cloudy, and windy here. There is no sunning going on here today! But there is a lot of blowing going on...the wind that is :wink:

Trace minerals aren't good enough. You need to get that colt some
free-choice horse mineral. How close are you to Alabama or Mike?
They can tell you where to get Vigortone mineral and they have
a great free-choice horse mineral. Or go to www.vigortone.com and find
a dealer. Use the toll-free number there to call in and they will tell
you the dealer nearest you.

Our daughter had a horse for years with feet that cracked. She put him on the free-choice and her farrier couldn't believe the difference in his feet. It also helps their bones and balances out things in their body.

If the feet are longer, maybe they just need trimmed. If a horse doesn't get enough exercise on a harder packed surface, they hooves don't wear down.

In the wild, horse hooves wear down and crack and break off from moving over rough ground. If the colt has always been in a stall or pasture that is softer ground, the hooves won't wear down.
 
hahahaha colt feet..........Our son was spending time with Mr Lilly's granny a couple years ago before she was put into a nursing home. (She'll be 102 in January) Anyway......he was down there all evenin and finally came home about 10 pm, with this horrified look on his face. I asked what was wrong???? He didnt say nothin, just walked to the tack room and came back with the hoof nippers and said, "Granny needs to use THESE on her toenails!!!!!" Apparently bein the good lil great grandson that he is, she'd asked him to clip her toenails because she can no longer reach them......and they was tuffffffff Hahahah

It's not good when you catch a colt, usually from a draft. The mane problem is you filly really badly and your voice gets raspy and horse. Your nose runs and you canter emember being this sick before. You even pastern out, and lay down though you had been stud up. You lose weight and are a mare-ceated. You just filly like hock, and it's a sad tail. :(

(and here I felt a little guilty posting my little silliness when this fellow has an honest horse health problem.)
 
prolly neither nere or there,but if I don't take my vit/mineral pills,both thumbnails split to the quick :???: If I tak'em,they don't.....mabe colt is same way??

Peg 4X4: That's what you get for horsing around so much. :P Next you'll have Faster Horses putting you on Vigortone
 
FH is right , and remember horses aren't cheap, what you spend is what you get. Spend the extra money and start the colt off right. You will never regret it. I am calling a guy today for some of that mineral that FH was talking about. I have used the grass formula for a horse with back problems and boy does it work!!! SPWeed you crack me up.
