Cookin On The Res

Wife wants to go to her home country for a Christmas get together this weekend. She's from up around Fargo. Why would anyone want to leave this kind of weather and go up where they've over a foot of snow on the ground. But being the good hubby I offered to take a couple hours out of my busy schedule and cook a bird to take along. Here's how the afternoon went. :wink:

Got my kitchen all set up.

When you said "cookin on the res"- and I saw that pot- the first things that came to mind was you were cooking tripe- or "dig deep the puppies on the bottom"... :wink: :lol:

The weather looks as nice there as it was here today...Just scarey tho having it so nice-- the pessimist in me knows there just has to be some winter around the corner :???: :wink: :lol:

My #3 daughters fiance bought one of them cookers...Decided he would cook a bird for Thanksgiving- but luckily tried it out a week or so before....Anyway they apparently had too many of those "cool ones" and lost track of their time or heat or something and when they took the bird out he was not only singed and cooked but almost cremated...

But they learned from their mistake- and cooked a good one for Thanksgiving---But I get to cook for Christmas-and it ain't gonna be no fowl meat---more like about 20lbs of Prime Rib..... :wink:

Those deep fryer/cookers can be scary.

I saw one take off once like a freakin' rocket....bird and all!!! :lol: :lol: :shock:
 
There's a few simple things a fellar can do to have a successful turkey cooking.

1. Always shoot the turkey on the lower branch if you're wanting more then one. It won't scare the rest off when it falls.

2. I always inject the bird with injectables. Sure adds a lot of flavor. You can also rub a little garlic butter on the outside for more added flavor.

3. Use peanut oil. You can reuse several times and it's not as flammable.

4. Make sure all the connection and are tight between the propane and stove.

5. Set everything up and get oil at right temp. 350-375 before tapping into the beer.

6. Cook at 3 minutes per lb. of bird, you can watch the clock or figure how long it takes to knock down a cool one and time accordingly. (remember ease the bird into the oil don't just drop it in)

7. Enjoy yourself it's not rocket science. Just glance at the temp once in a while to make sure it's not getting too hot.

8. Best to cook while wife is gone. They tend to worry too much about time, messes, a couple minutes longer cookin won't hurt anyone.

9. Cold beer, ice cold beer. Relax, enjoy life, like Soapweed say's "Tomorrow may never come, so enjoy the heck out of today!



Old timer--This is the only way I'll eat turkey, but given a choice I'd take that beef you're cooking for Christmas over the birds any day! :wink:
 
When we have gregs family Xmas get together we always deep fry the turkey,injection of choice is Southern Creole for one side of turkey barbaque mesquite for the other...good stuff

Uhhh,our guys relax with Crown Royal while waiting for the turkey to cook,and yup us women oversee it

Well some of those hillbillies you run with probably use "white lightnin" instead of peanut oil :wink: :lol:
