Most US consumers see that USDA label and think they're getting US product. Why would they demand something they think they're already getting?

Looking back at the original post---the author is the President & CEO of the American Meat Institute--that represents the major multinational meatpackers, that want to continue the ability to profit from the FRAUD and DECEPTION to US consumers by importing cheap foreign meat and passing it off to US consumers as US meat-- at a big profit to themselves....What else do you expect him to say? :lol: :lol:


This is the same AMI organization responsible for this infamous quote...Trying to make you think all these wealthy cattle producers are starving the poor- while the corporates make such a pittance :???: :roll: :roll: :lol: :lol:

So much for their credibility.......
 
Those big boys finally got beat at their own game because somebody finally fought for producers - and they're not taking it very well.

R-CALF USA has proposed the following changes to the draft COOL rule for beef:

1 )Simplify labeling of beef from animals not exclusively born, raised and slaughtered in the U.S.;

2) Simplify labeling of blended products;

3) Allow retailers to rely on pre-labeled products;

4) Allow packers to use import markings to determine origin;

5) Eliminate requirement to document the chain of custody;

6) Eliminate supplier's duty to demonstrate separate tracking;

7) Reduce the record retention requirement to one year;

8) Specify that supplier affidavits and third-party verification audits are not required.

This has nothing to do with making the packers more accountable and everything to do with penalizing foreign producers. Why twist it around?

Making it easier to comply penalizes foreign producers? :shock: :lol: Lets start with your first highlight. Explain how that penalizes you.
 
The cost is involved in segreation in the meatcase as well as countering the negative advertising from the R-Calfs of the country towards imported meat. Tell me where ANY of those points cuts the cost for US producers. Looks to me it just makes it easier for the big packers who you seem to think you have trumped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The cost is segregating in the meat case? I've got an idea; Put the US product on the right side and the rest on the left side. How much would that cost?

You didn't answer the question. Maybe you didn't understand it? Let me explain. Animals not exclusively born, raised and slaughtered in the US could be yours. R-CALF is making it easier to label them.

Now, how does making it easier to comply with the law for your product penalize you?

If you can't back your points, don't try to make them. Either you can think for yourself, or you're just being a parrot. I asked you about the effects of simplification of labeling and you talk about segregation in the cooler, a prediction on advertising, and then try to imply somebody has argued COOL will cut costs for US producers. You're all over the board and the question remains unanswered. Can you defend your arguement or would you rather go off on something else again - maybe blame R-CALF for global warming as well?

What I have noticed is more of the garden variety R-CALF bashing. You guys/gals say, "R-CALF wants this and R-CALF want's that. R-CALF is doing this...." all if it BS and when you get called on it, you've got nothing. Can't back any of it, so you go on a personal attack. Typical grade-school "debate".
 
R-Calf bashing? Personal attacks? My you are getting paranoid! My point is that many of the past posters on this site who actually contributed something worth reading have been chased away by the R-Calf propoganda twins, Sandhusker and Oldtimer. Not sure if it was the incessant whining or that everyone just found better things to do.

Fine, you can't back your accusation on that point. Let's try the next one;

All this angst, trashing, bashing..........over the approximately 5% of imported beef that WILL BE AFFECTED by COOL.

A whopping 5% of imported beef is sold in the retail sales. The rest is in the exempted food service category, isn't it?

When the Senate comes back in session ,Harkin has the chance to change the above statement of 5% to 100% with no exempted food service category for COOL.

Why would you vaccinate the entire herd when only 5% of them are sick?

If you're going to be any kind of a business person, MRJ, you've got to plan ahead. This requires vision to see what may cause problems in the future and then take preventative measures today.

Imported beef is a minority in the beef case TODAY. You now look at the positions the US packers are taking in foreign countries, acquistions foreign packers are taking in this country, the expansion of "Free Trade" agreements etc... and we surely are headed to a higher percentage tomorrow.

You've got to move the herd when you see the clouds. If you wait until the blizzard hits, it's too late.

Do you always vaccinate the sick ones? Most of us who vaccinate do them all when they are healthy as the idea is to build up their immune system so they don't get sick. :roll:
 
To say segregating in the meat counter is not going to cost anything is a very simple comment on a very complicated procedure.

I doubt if very many people here are aware of just what goes in to getting a product on the shelves of the big supermarket chains. There was a very good documentary on that subject a few years ago that was quite an eye opener. To get shelf space at a big grocery chain is not just offering your product for sale. You pay for premium spots. Check out where different products are in your local store next time you shop. Notice that the big name products are always in the prime spots? Eye level. End of row. Fancy displays. If you want generic or off brand products, look down to the bottom row. The prime spots have been negotiated for and paid for in one way or another. The best display locations go to the biggest players in the food industry. MCOOl has been designed to ensure that imported meat becomes the small player, and if it's supporters have their dreams come true, a non-player due to costs and poor product placement.

But then again, consumers just may find where the good beef has been coming from all along, and start hunting those dark back shelves for the beef with the maple leaf on it. :wink: :wink: :wink: 8) :D
 
I think M-COOL may be the least of the Canadians/foreign countries that export to the US worries...

I watched an interview with Senator Durbin on TV today--and he said imported products and food safety will be the number 1 issue when Congress starts up after break....More intense labeling laws- and more testing of imported products..

He said that Congress will not stand for the excuses of CSPC, FDA, USDA, that they can only inspect less than 1% of all imported products...He said there will be a bi-partisan push to require inspection of ALL imported food products-and that nothing imported should be allowed in until its tested-even if it sets at the ports/borders until they get the infrastructure built-and they will fund the increased persons and labs needed with a surcharge put on all imported food products...
He says the surcharge (he was talking $20 shipment) is completely legal under all the trade agreements because it falls under the same laws as the 9/11 Homeland Security law which now has a border surcharge to fund the additional border security checks necessary.....

To me it would be easier and cheaper just to tell folks the truth about the origin of the products they are buying (M-COOL) and let them make the decision...
