Coors Brewing Company to Donate 1 Million Pounds of Feed Pellets to Help Cattle Ranches
Business Wire, February 05, 2007
GOLDEN, Colo., Feb 05, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Coors Brewing Company will donate 1 million pounds of pellets to Operation Blizzard Benefit, a relief effort coordinated by the Colorado Cattlemen's Association, the state's leading agricultural organization. Operation Blizzard Benefit is alleviating the hardships suffered by ranchers and farmers as a result of the recent storms by coordinating and distributing donations throughout the state.
The pellets, a by-product of the brewing process, consist of spent grain and are high in protein. Coors' donation, which is enough to feed 200,000 cattle for one day, will be distributed to farmers and ranchers by local chapters of the Colorado Cattlemen's Association, the Colorado Livestock Association and Colorado Farm Bureau. Teague Diversified, Inc., the animal feed broker for Coors, helped facilitate the effort and contributed part of the transportation costs.
"We're pleased to be able to help these vital Colorado communities that have been hit hard by a difficult winter," said Dennis Puffer, chief supply chain officer, Coors Brewing Company. "At Coors, we have two longstanding commitments - to support our local communities and to recycle the rich by-products from our brewing process. With today's donation, we're able to do both."
"Over the past month the Colorado Cattlemen's Association has been working to help ranchers feed their cattle. We thank Coors for this generous donation which enables us to reach even more ranches and farms," said Terry Frankhauser, executive vice president, Colorado Cattlemen's Association.
Since late December, many ranchers and farmers in Colorado have faced challenges in keeping their herds alive. As a result of the recent storms, efforts to transport food to the ranches and to reach cattle to feed them have been obstructed, and cattle have been unable to graze in their natural habitat. The pellets, valued at approximately $75,000, will help feed cattle well into spring. The first shipments of pellets left the Coors Brewery today.
