Corgi Pros & Cons

Pro's: cute as h*ll, Highly trainable, Highly intelligent., smaller = cheaper to feed, vet care,etc. Great to cuddle with their soft fur. protective of their home/yard..not mean just will let you know if something or someone is creeping around.....has been known to chase off critters....

Con's: can get bored easily and get into trouble fast, likes to herd everything! kids,cars,etc . so it must be taught what is O.K. to herd and what is not!, can become a killer if not handled right" a killer of ducks,geese,chickens,other small critters" They think they are 10 foot tall and bullet proof...pro and con in my book.....They shed a lot as they are a breed with a thick under coat, brushing or trimming them helps with this.

Personally I love the breed...they are very nice sized dogs, not to big but not a small fu-fu dog and can go all day, they are a working breed so they do, do best when given a job of some sort.."does not have to be herding work" they excel at a number of things." They are so smart training them is always fun..you have to be smarter than the dog to get them to do what you want. They do not react well to harsh treatment, they tend to shut down and go into whatever mode. They can get out of control very easy with lack of training much like border collies. They have a lot of energy so unless you'll be using the dog as a working dog you'll need to find a way to "burn" some of it off....many love to play ball,Frisbee,go for a run,etc....they don't look like they are "fast" moving dogs but trust me they are lil 4 legged jet packs.

How old is the dog? Does it have any issues? chases cars,herd kids,etc?
One nice thing I have found about them is unless a bad behavior is really ingrained into them most can be retaught right from wrong......also most older dogs that maybe lacking in the obedience dept. can be taught with no more work than a puppy to mind very well.....we see a lot of them in the rescue I work for....many people just think oh a cute med/small dog to have around and go buy one...only to get it home and find out they have a 25-30 lb ball of energy that starts to find interesting ways of letting it out when the owners don't have the time to put into the dog. Pros...great loyal dogs with wonderful personalities, who generally like everyone. The ones I've seen are good herders for cattle, sheep, old people and kids.

Cons...they shed all the time, but with a little combing with a scotch comb looking dog comb it is manageable. And according to our vet., Corgis don't like vets. very much. The only person/place our Corgi, Holly, doesn't like is the Vet. Clinic. Heck she won't even let the Vet. in the house.

I'd say your getting a good gift Kola.

She's 16 wks old and sitting in my lap right now. Man, you were'nt kidding about the shedding were you!!!! :shock: :shock: :shock:

I've already got an Aussie and Blue Heeler that were reject from society. This one is a child of a divorce. Neither party wanted her......gave her back to the breeder who is a friend of mine.


Her name is Fern!
 
I agree pretty much with chickshunt2.


Our two Corgis are totally adorable and they adore us. They are very protective of what is theirs (including their humans) but ours have never bitten anyone. They do shed ALOT but it's something we put up with since they more than make up for it in other ways. Our male is very smart, he helps us run cattle into the head catch.....he bites them through the boards. If they still won't go in, he goes right behind them and bites their heels and they jump right in. Our female gets a little bit out of hand and we keep her tied up when we work cattle. They love to herd but ours don't get into much trouble....if they go off on a chase they listen when called back. I won't ever own another breed.

BTW, ours have it good because we ranch and they have lots of room to run.

Fern at 16 weeks....she's trainable. :D :D :D What color is she? Post a pic?
 
As soon as I get to where I can figure out this new puter I'll try to post a pic. Got a new laptop , new programs...the whole deal...old one had a MAJOR stroke.

She's sable with a white collar and a bit of grey on her snout.


And full of pizz and vinegar. Already tried to take on the bull.....he weighs about 2700 lbs.....he just looked at her like, " Are you kidding", blew snot and walked off. :lol: :lol: :lol:
 
I'll bet she's beautiful! I can't wait to see her picture :)

Yup, they are little BIG dogs. She'll have your bull "buffaloed" in no time. Ours respect these little dogs and are pretty easy to move around :lol:
 
I think she may have been the runt of the litter. Her full brother Owen ....."works".....at the vet office and he's a good deal bigger than Fern.



I'm so used to BIG dogs that it's hard to get used to having a little dog around and I also used to getting rejects and nut cases that are already grown dogs that need rehab.

Gonna have to go back to the basics with this little girl as she's a clean slate
 
Pro's- will sit at your feet, follow you anywhere (Bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, truck etc.)
Con's shedding. Mine likes to chase vehicles. Been working with him to keep him from doing it. His mom was run over doing the same thing.

First time ours saw a bull they snorted and he turned tail and ran. :lol:

Won't ever have a different dog. I just love corgis. :D
 
Since I'm in such a much warmer climate than most of you I wonder if shedding will be an issue with Fern.

Our critters down here DO NOT put on a lot of hair in the winter....no matter the breed or critter.

I guess I'll let ya know about that come Dec or Jan. :wink:
 
That will be interesting to know. Ours shed all year long, it's worse in the summer and after a bath... :shock: If you give her a bath, be sure to comb the heck out of her!

Been there done that with the bath thing already!!

Good thing I saved all those brushed and combs from my dearly departed housecats!!!! :wink:

NOTE: Living in a warm climate has NOTHING to do with the shedding of a Corgi I have found out!!


HOLY SMOKES......it's amazing how they shed and still have hair!!!!!


Thank god for Swiffer!!! :lol: :lol: :lol:
