I'll have to say lilly...your critters do have personality and character! I love the little calves though, they are the cutest! I was just telling hubby tonite that with the warmer temps (above freezing)..spring can't be that far off...he just rolled his eyes and said "you're dreaming again"...but that flower gives me hope! Thanks

Note the green grass comin up in the background....... yeap spring is bout here. Today we had upper 70s. Was almost hot, was muggy for sure with all the rain we've had lately too. But we had a front blow thru this evenin, and it's cooled off conciderably tonight. Hey...we even were under a tornado warning this afternoon. That definately is spring weather in Texas.

I enjoyed the pictures, Lilly. Thanks!!

One thing I did notice...are your cattle pretty much confined in a small lot?

Reason why I asked...we had the honor of Dr. Don Bliss (he is one of the worlds formost authorities on parasites) of Mid America Labs speak at our customer Appreciation Dinner Tuesday night and he
talked about using avermectin products over and over killing the dung beetles. The manure piles that shows in the grass in your pictures reminded me of the slides he had where the dung beetles had been killed off by the avermectin products and there was nothing to break down the manure. :?

his website is: http://www.midamericaagresearch.net/research.php

I've heard him speak on two other occasions and he tells it like it is.
He sure doesn't worry about being politically correct. :P

Faster horses,
No our cows aren't in small lots. They are loose. The reason there's lots of cow poop in the pictures, is because that's up where we have fed hay. All that's fresh poop. We move our hay rings and put out hay in different spots. Right now it's so wet and muddy, that in some area's we've had to start puttin out hay where we've already fed, because we'll get stuck if we go further out in the pasture.

We have lots of dung beatles. If it would dry out some, you could tell where they've been at work. After they've done their job, the cow poop kinda looks like a pile of dry grass clippings, and it just falls apart.

I try to keep an eye out for those beatles. Ever so often I'll just go around kickin the cow piles over, to see what's underneath. Lots of holes on the bottom side of the patty :D

When alls said and done, and we are done feedin hay for the winter, I will disk the all areas where we fed hay, and kinda turn it all under. Really gets the grass growin good in those areas.

I'm planning on disking alot of the other pastures as well....the hogs haven't give me much choice. They've rooted up so much of the back pasture, that you can't drive across it, without hangin on for dear life.

Your calves sure look good! That black cows ears are hilarious. Are the iris's one of the first flowers there? Here they come on fairly late.

Dung beetles are not limited to the cow lot :) I think there are a few at the newspaper office too :)

Course we deal in a lot of dung .... :cboy: :lol2: :lol2:
