Dad had bought a 1993 Cummins for a service truck, and I jokingly told him When he seized the rear end or blows the tranny, I'm going to take it out and put it in my truck, and this has got me wondering if you would need to beef up the front end or could you juist swap it with the front end off a 6.5L Diesel half ton? or would the motor still be too heavy?

I don't have an answer for you....I suspect though you will need to beef up the suspension.

Your title got my attention, since my name is Cummins....and I drive a GMC Duramax.

chevy has never made a half-ton diesel. but yes you will have to beef the suspension to put a cummins in a half ton. its not real hard. we swapped a cummins into a dakota a few years ago.
Chevy put a 350 Diesel in half tons in the late 70s to early 80s and a 6.2 Diesel in the +- late 80s to early 90s.

I agree !

on a nice quiet night, we like to sit around and listen to the Chevy's rust!

sorry i meant they never put the 6.5L in a half ton. i remember the 6.2 in a few half ton trucks. Those werent as heavy as a cummins though. and trucks were alot tougher back then than they are now. i got a 89 dodge cummins with 685000 miles that still doesnt need to be plugged in to crank.

My wife had a chev with a 350 pretend diesel when I met her. When it blew up (they all did) I installed a Rocket 455 olds in that hole. Boy was that a fun truck. :-)

if i remember right our freind gcreek had 350 dieselback in the lat 70's and had nothing but trouble with it.

I managed to get it warmed up good and traded it back to the crooked used car salesman that sold it to me. Boy was I glad it started on the turn of the key that day.

I heard later that they put a 350 in it. It would have been fun with a Rocket also. :D

I had a '78 that wound up with an Olds 455 in it also. I bet just the idea would be illegal today. Man would that thing go... until it saw a gas pump.

I had a Cutlass with a 455, it went as fast as I wanted. Never tried putting a Cummings in it.

Chevrolet did make a 6.5L in a half ton, as did they make a 6.2, and the 5.7 way back in the day.

And Jigs/cowsense, I have too much self respect to drive a ford, and enough common sense to not drive a dodge

Is Ford still getting the Cummins in 2012? And If so is Dodge still going to have it in their trucks?

ACS........You're getting pretty cocky for a GM owner. Ford has developed their own diesel after a messy divorce with Navistar.......Dodge still has Cummins!
BTW didja get that tail gate warmer fixed on that Heavy Chevy?

That option also doubles as a hand warmer for the pushers.

I heard somewhere that Ford picked up the cummins and I was just curious. And no, I don't need a tail gate heater, just some longer two hooks for getting the fords out fo their situations

I have always been a Ford man, but bought a Dodge because i wanted the cummins. been pleased with the cummins, but still like the ride of the Ford a LOT better than the Dodge.

with the recent financial situation and the auto buy outs, I think every American needs to look at the idea of who took no cash, and who is profitable... FORD.

I have towed more chebby's into town than I can count.... every brand gets stuck, but the one I see get pulled out the most is those city slickers who get a 4x4, jack it up, and get wide tires..... like a pig on ice...

Jigs, The Chev's that are in my price range are used, and I wouldn't be buying them from a dealer in the first place, so in my mind it doesn't really matter if they received government bailout or not. Yes, they did mismanage and should have made some changes in their financial department, but it would not deter me from buying another GMC product. And the Canadians need to look at it too, not just the americans

I have my tortion bars cranked and I have 32's, but will be getting 33's in the near future. They aren't real fat, and they aren't high enough to slaughter my fuel economy. If you're gonna buy a truck, it doesn't matter what you do to it, long story short, Trucks were made to be worked, it doesn't matter what you do to them, you'll never be able to work with it until you know how to drive it
