sure nice to see something green, it's been white for so long and they are predicting more tomorrow and thurs. you will enjoy the discbine, especially in tough going. do you not wait until the oats head out? and get some grain in them.

I like to do them in the boot stage and we also are on a time limit, need to get them done an the ground ready to plant cotton.hayguy said:

I would cut them in that stage too, but around here it's about quantity. That and the hay is ready then.
It would be nice though, because like you say the calves will eat it whereas calves don't eat greenfeed cut in the grain stage. They only sift through for the grain.

this is the best thing about this site,seeing how things are done in other parts of the world. around here oats for greenfeed are usually left to the dough stage before being cut. cereal silage as well, i do understand your time constraints as well as the palatability/separation issues for calves. perhaps i will try some both way's this year

I use a liquid inoculant called Hay Saver from Bioag in Winnipeg. Lactic Acid and Acidophilus. I can bale at 30% (they recommend 25%) which up until last year has always been easy to get down to. Cost last year was 2.50 for a 1000 lb bale.
