cypress hills gather

In speaking with my local and other market reps, the consensus is that there are many more breds coming this fall than in the past few years. Look at crowfoot and ranchers choice(Dilibaugh/Robinson) dispersals. Between the two alone there are over two thousand purebred cows selling in December. Where are all these cows going to go?

Well they came from somewhere they'll go somewhere else I guess-the one dispersal for sure has nothing to do with the state of the cattle business-not sure what the Dillabaugh deal is all about though.

Friend of ours went to a bred cow sale in Mobridge, SD yesterday, thinking
there might be some decent buys. The cows he picked brought $1375.
He picked these out of a complete dispersion, but all the cows sold higher
than he thought they would, since last year was so dry in that area.

I'm happy for the sellers. I think he said the complete dispersion was
something like 700-800 head and they must have averaged $1250,
using cowboy math. He said they were really long, good cows.

FH:

Your friend bought a well managed set of cows. BVD tested, whole herd health managed, etc. Unfortuantely, from what we hear is that the drought has had little to do with that particular dispersion, a family divorce has. I hope they do well for your friend.

There should have been a pretty decent set of Red Angus bred heifers selling at the sale yesterday too. Their sellers are long time Red Angus breeders who buy customers heifer calves, develop and breed them, then sell them as breds. We sure hope they had a good day too.

Too bad you didn't come along for the ride, you could have stopped and visited on your way.

Cheers---

NR. With the number of cows on the market it will be an interesting time , maybe there will be some deals to be had. The commercial cattle are one thing, but it will be tough to absorb the number of PB cows into the industry unless there are a few new producers coming into the business. Time will tell the storey.
