ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Just the word rattlesnake is enough to invoke terror in many people. But just imagine finding a super-sized serpent slithering around your backyard.
Some folks in St. Augustine did. An Eastern Diamondback Rattler was found Sunday in Tuscany Village, a new development near the Outlet Malls.
The snake measured out to be seven feet, three inches long. The record in Florida is eight feet.
"I've never seen a snake that size in my life," said homeowner, Scott Russom. He and his neighbors kept the snake in their sights until a trapper arrived.
Brandon Booth, the A-1 Trapper Man, told Action News he's seen snakes like that before. And he knows they're not something to mess around with. "They're venomous. So they can kill you or make you lose a limb." he said.
Booth killed the snake and gave it to a local man, who will use its skin to make sheaths for knives.
But he says Florida homeowners should beware. Eastern Diamondbacks are popular in our area. He says the best way to keep them off your property is to toss some moth balls in your yard.
