Huge rattlesnake found in St. Augustine

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Just the word rattlesnake is enough to invoke terror in many people. But just imagine finding a super-sized serpent slithering around your backyard.

Some folks in St. Augustine did. An Eastern Diamondback Rattler was found Sunday in Tuscany Village, a new development near the Outlet Malls.

The snake measured out to be seven feet, three inches long. The record in Florida is eight feet.

"I've never seen a snake that size in my life," said homeowner, Scott Russom. He and his neighbors kept the snake in their sights until a trapper arrived.

Brandon Booth, the A-1 Trapper Man, told Action News he's seen snakes like that before. And he knows they're not something to mess around with. "They're venomous. So they can kill you or make you lose a limb." he said.

Booth killed the snake and gave it to a local man, who will use its skin to make sheaths for knives.

But he says Florida homeowners should beware. Eastern Diamondbacks are popular in our area. He says the best way to keep them off your property is to toss some moth balls in your yard.

I bet u texans are mad about how big that fla rattler is. Spechly u haymaker. Lol. That about 100 miles from us, dew east. It a wonder the man aint got in trouble killin it. In most countys its illegal. The bigest one I ever kilt was 5 ft 3. The next day I kilt one 2 inches shorter. I was 18 and it was in the login woods. Sorry again about the big snake haymaker. I'm sure yall got more of them tho. Lol!

Haha ya can keep alllllllll of them big rattlers like that in Florida. I can live happily ever after without ever meetin up with one of those. Had my fair share of dealin with rattlers growin up in West Texas.....at least here....the majority of the snakes we have are copperheads. And not huge one's. Still make ya hurt yerself tryin to get away from one if ya get too close before ya know it's there.....But they ain't very big...

Had the termite man leave the access door to our house open one time and we had a few mice get in and make their way inside the house. While we were trying to rid ourselves of the mice, I happened to be out in the backyard and saw this chidken snake about 2 ft long. I caught him and put him under the house not saying anything to my wife as I recall I kinda really forgot about it. Mice problem was eliminated but about 6-8 months later one day I come home from work and my wife and house cat have a chicken snake penned down in the utility room. He was about 4 ft long. Needless to say I didn't have a clue how he could have gotten in. :)
