CSC's football team is still undefeated having won their game Saturday against West Texas A&M in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. They have gotten where they are largely because of running back Danny Woodhead, orignially from North Platte, NE, whose only a Junior.

I saw him play for the first time on Saturday and he was everything I'd heard about and more. No one can stop him. He's 5' 8" tall, weighs 200 pounds with legs like tree stumps and can change directions quicker than a jack rabbit. Tacklers try to hit him but he's gone in a different direction before they know where he went. He ran for 252 yards Saturday and they took him out with 3 minutes left in the game.

The following are highlights of an article from the Omaha World Herald on him published in October, three games ago:

Through 29 career games he has rushed for 5,694 yards, a 196-yard per game average since he started as a freshman at Chadron State College, Chadron, NE. He has scored scored 71 touchdowns. If he continues at that clip (he's a Junior), he'll finish his career with 8,234 total yards and 104 touchdowns which would blow away the existing NCAA records in all four college classifications.

This year he is averaging 235 yards per game, or 8.6 yards per carry. In fact, at this rate, he will have rushed for more yards than anybody who's ever played NCAA football at any level by the fifth game of next season. He could become the first player in NCAA history to surpass 8,000 yards or 100 touchdowns.

The current career rushing records are:
Division III R. J. Bowers, Grove City 7,353 total yards
Division II Brian Shay, Emporia State 6,958
Division I-AA Adrian Peterson, Georgia Southern 6,559
Division I-A Ron Dayne, Wisconsin 6,397

The total rushing touchdown record is 94 by Ian Smart, Division II (Travis Prentice, Miami of Ohio, Division I-A had 73).

Isn't amazing how a few years ago, a stud player came along every 5 or so years, and now there's one popping up every season? Guess that's what selective breeding will do!  Setting records like that, I can't wait to see a game and watch this kid.

I can't say for sure what occured during the breeding process in this case!

It does seem that kids keep getting bigger, faster and stronger each generation. When I was in school, a tall kid was 6 feet. Now that height is common and many go to 6' 3" and higher. Wouldn't that indicate that our food supply is better today than it used to be? The media would like to scare us into believing otherwise.

Woodhead is much more than the ordinary stud that pops up every year or so. He can be compared to any of the Greats of all time. Granted Chadron is in Division II, but the talk is that he'd be playing for any Division I school in the nation. He was passed over because of his size, but schools like the University of Nebraska have to be wishing they'd recruited him now.

Nah, JF, they will just blame all the growth hormones in beef, chicken and pork contributing to it   It has a lot to do with nutrition and abundant supply of protein and even good beds (I can't remember where I read this but I do remember seeing that sleeping on a good bed was better tahn the floor or whatever)..

Congrats to the kid, 20-30 years ago he would have gone to Nebraska or some other Diviison I school when they had more scholorships than they do today. It has been a boon for compition throughout college football and has trickled down to the smaller schools as well. Some of those power conference schools used to have second teams that could beat the weaker schools.
