DDA Emblazon 27C

Last night to get away from all the woman talk :roll: my son and I got on the computer and talking about some of the bulls we would like to use AI on some heifers...
One that we both liked was 27C- but he is a tish low on calving ease numbers and a little higher on BW EPD than I usually use on heifers--but in reading Diamond D's catalog they said their average BW was 78 on bull calves and 74 on heifers out of the cows they've calved (101 head)- which isn't bad....

Just wondering- has any one used him on heifers and what did they experience?...Any goods or bads anyone experienced?
 
I have used 27c, but not on heifers. I have used DDA 6D on heifers and his BW is lower than 27c, but his EPD has been on the increase. I did pull some 6D calves. I had alot of mid 80 lb calves with 6D. In my book it would be a toss up whether to use him on heifers. If you watch them close enough you should be OK, but plan on pulling a few. Also on 6D we must have put the semen in backwards :wink: :lol:
 
Thanks Horseless-- thats kind of what I was thinking- and his blocky build doesn't appear that much like a "heifer bull" to me...Neither DDA nor ABS list his actual birthweight, but I thought I heard somewhere it was near 90 lbs...

I'm lazy and do most the heifer checking- I don't like to pull calves, so maybe I'll win this argument and we will go with N Bar Primetime... I like that proven +14 calving ease and -1.7 BW epd (78 actual) he has....
 
In reading these posts by "Oldtimer" reinforces my comments on the other Forum to some breeders who were curious as to how one "Manages" the EPD's that specific individual animals may show. I feel that a breeder must "tweak" the particular EPD's that BOTH the cow and bull are carrying in order to 'hedge your bet' in the direction you wish to go for whatever purpose you plan to use the calves. Experience and type of operation will dictate your choices and how tightly you wish to breed those EPD's.

EPD's are not a Guarantee of results. After all, they are EXPECTED Progeny Differences - not GMR's (Guaranteed Mating Results)! I think that some of our new breeders misunderstand at times how EPD's REALLY function. It's not a matter of throwing in a bunch of numbers and - - ZOWEE - - - we are off to the races! The PRINICPLE of Genetics is solid - the RESULTS can be variable - at times!
