Deep, broad fronted cattle

Everybody seems to breed for "Clean Fronts" these days, but I have noticed some of the best doing cows with a lot of longevity seem to be out big heart girthed bulls that also very deep chested and seemed to "carry more leather" in front than is popular. I am not advocating brahman style dewlap in english cattle, but couldn't we do with some chest width and depth (and maybe a little leather) than is popular now?

The "clean fronts" are a reflection of the club calf deal, goes along with a small appetite and slow growth. Big chested, deep sided, deep throated animals have always had bigger appetites and grown faster. The show ring has screwed some people in the industry up about as much as anything else could.

I agree as long as the shoulders don't get too course and blocky. Like any other trait, too much can be bad. But i'll take deep girthed, soggy calves every time. Our industry sometimes follows trends like a teenage girl! Remember the 80's? 1500 pound finishing weights on show calves that were taller than the kid showing them. I would like to see cows that will produce fleshy, deep, meaty calves that will finish at 1050 to 1150. Just my 2 cents.
